QLD Downshift Meet 29/4

Ddubtoille and I went along to the Downshift Meet on Sunday to ensure that the MR2 was properly represented amongst the huge number of cars that attended. I didn't actually count the cars but I have to say that it felt like 2000.

These events are unusual in that they are not really a "car show" in what has been the traditional way of doing things. This one as described to me by Ddubtoille was more a "jdm/downshift" meet, and if you don't know the story behind all this check out the video link.

Although there were obviously car clubs at the meet it wasn't in a Datto's here, Honda's there, Skylines down the back type of environment, and all the vibes were extremely positive. Ddubtoille and I had the frunks, trunks and engines open, which received some very strange looks, and a couple of questions to Ddubtoille about did the battery in the front mean it was an electric car? I was actually asked if I had trailered mine there as the engine was obviously missing.

All of this was done in good fun, and there were no burnouts, loud music or angst about riceburners versus V8's (of which there were a few, including a 1973 Mercedes sedan in great condition). All in all it was about bring what you have no matter what condition its in, and it was good fun. A two dollar admission fee was charged to pay for the hire of the place (a local showground), and not a blue uniform in sight, largely because there didn't need to be.

Hope you enjoy the pictures. Remember, these meets are in the spirit of everyone who loves cars just getting together and having fun so please comment accordingly. The red SW belongs to Ddubtoille and NO, the shiny SW is not mine.

I was there (I spoke to you at some point). I didn't notice any police attention at all. I was parked right down the front near the entrance/exit.

yeah lately they have been getting permission I know the first one of this year there was a pre meet almost as large as the actual meet that the cops showed up to and started defecting cars but that wasn't at the actual meet. They are only doing the meets in legal locations where they have permission so there is no problem. Of course you have to be careful when you leave the cops always know about these events before they happen so theres no stoping them setting up a few speed traps in the area

I'll have to upload some of my pictures tomorrow when I have more time. It was a great time despite the on/off weather. I think we could get a nice group of mr2s there people where obviously interested in the cars but surprisingly didn't know too much about them we brought quite a crowd to the cars when I was checking a rattling noise under the frunk, everyone wanted to check out the "engine"

When you watch the video on the link posted the guy who was one of the original organisers of this type of get-together said that they started them in public places like shopping centre car parks open to the public, so this obviously gave the police some cause for concern as non-car owners may have complained, with or without a good reason. However, as the guy also said when they moved to a hired venue they didn't have any problems, but I agree that the public roads around the area would be a possible booking zone.

However, I didn't see any police at all on Sunday and in my view there was no reason for them to be there. It just shows everyone that with a bit of fun and no stupid behaviour you can have a good time and just enjoy everybody's passion for what they own and drive.

Anyway, with cars like these eco-friendly battery driven electric SW20 MR2's at Downshift what is there to complain about? LOL

On a more concerning note I agree with Ddubtoille about how little was known about the MR2. Hopefully we can do something about this by going on the runs and events like these and Maclean's Bridge. Thanks for the invite.

I only got my car running/driving on Friday night so I hadn't noticed you guys had planned to go as well. Next time we should meet up before hand or go early and park together.
