mr2 turbo, gen 2, low rev reading. (FIXED)
hey, not sure whats been happening with my car, but lately i have been getting a low rpm reading (mainly when its cold). i useto get a cold start of 1600 rpm and able to rev freely to 7200, theses days its been cold start of 700ish and than when i drive gradually increases to 1000, but with fuel cut of 5500 sometimes even lower. only happens on cold days though. the speeds exactly the same as if it would rev to 7200. the car is a 1990 mr2 gt, turbo - mods, exhaust - serviced regularly. thanks :)

Does it idle properly when warm? Have you done any diagnostic tests yet to see if there are are any error codes? Cheers

Dont think so, coolant temp. sensor is for cold starts, shouldnt affect the higher end revs. could be your afm, knock sensor, or even intercooler piping come undone who knows do the diagnostics and see what codes you get first, then go from there cheers

ok, i got codes 24, 31, 43 24 Intake Air Temperature Sensor signal. 31 Air Flow Meter signal (Vacuum Sensor signal). 43 Starter signal. im assuming the first 2 are afm related, but unsure what 43 is?

yeah i guessed as much with the AFM, try/borrow another one and see if it fixes it. have you got a pod filter on it, if so remove and check and see if the IAT sensor is clogged (small white probe inside AFM, you dont need to open the afm up just push the flap open a bit and you should see it) and be carefull disconnecting the afm plug from the afm, theres a pin on the clip you need to remove DO NOT TOUCH OR UNDO THE SCREWS HOLDING THE PLUG/SOCKET i also got 43 at one stage not sure what it was tbh, it never bothered me as the car always started fine, it could ahve been my weak battery which i have changed recently. Its also possible your strater relay is fubared and is causing this code. dont forget to reset the codes after you fix the problem otherwise they will come back again. cheers

yeah 43 (or was it 34) seemed to be perfectly normal on mine too -I wouldn't worry about that one. like purple said - DON'T undo the screws on the AFM plug/socket - did that once on a Camry and it destroyed the internals. IF you need access to the AFM internals you need a razor blade and cut around the seal on the black top plastic cap and take that off.

yer thats fine, i ended up cleaning the afm but the problem still there, started idle at 700 this morning than gradually increased to 1200, than down to 1000 ish.. still have a fuel cut of 5200. might just be the afm. could it be this aswell? http://mr2.noegruts.com/tachometer/tachometer.htm also at 100ks in 5th gear, my tacho reads 2300 or so, whats it meant to be normally? (think it was around 2900-3000) edit: added link

Good work, hope mine doesn't do the same Btw actual 100 km/h in 5th is only ~2600 rpm in mine. i.e. ~2500 rpm indicated.

its actually quite easy, just melt the solder enough and than pull one part of the capacitor out, than do the same to the other side. just remember which side it goes on. jaycar sells the capacitor for 30 cents each.
