car has been at mechanics for almost a year!!! :(
I have a mr2 spyder which i drove for 3 weeks and has been at the mechanics since September last year! it was taken to toyota and they said the ECU might be the problem, so i has the ecu taken out and tested and they said it was fine, then i had my car towed to a mechanic who has had it ever since, he has changed everything in the transmission and it still does not go past second gear.
What do i do????

X 2 to finding another mechanic. Also try an auto electrician that has a decent diagnostic tool to see if it is coming up with any faults, surely it will be logging something if it is an electrical issue.
Or try another Toyota dealership, if anyone should be able to fix a Toyota it should be them.

Manual transmission swap? But seriously, X 3 take it to another mechanic. Which mechanic by the way?

My brother in law has a workshop in Adelaide that specialises in Auto trans. He's a very fair guy and has a special spot for MR2's (well at least he say's he has one for mine....)
If you were offering actual money, I'm sure he'd be interested.

I dont think you care about your car or you would of jumped up and down at max one month later.
The bill might be that big that you may as well leave the car there

^^ well I guess like some of us the car was bought as a weekend toy and isn't needed as a daily. Still, its a long time to have any car sitting at a mechanics. The semi-auto/ manumatic thing was not a success for Toyota. Have met a few Toyota mechanics who claim to have rebuild/replaced the zz gearbox under warranty and they warned me off that car. There is a reason the price of the zz is falling way below the sw's. But as sweetpete will argue, the 'proper' manual zz is a nice car.

monday morning 8am. Call and demand to know what is going on.
Could be they have just given up on it, only work on it when they have spare time, as they can't find the fault.

toyota dealer for this one.
ps. its just a sequential (very much like e36 bmw style smg) so its not a semi auto.

What exactly is the problem?
Just wont goto 2nd gear??
Does it creep when its in 'N' ??
Have they checked the SMT ecu??
Have they done the relearn procedure??
Have they check the SMT hydraulic fluid??
Toyota dont know much about the SMT, their quit useless actually!
