Eric's SW20 G-Limited Hardtop - JDM

Hey everyone

So I'm new to this forum, and after some reading around I thought I should post up my SW20

This is my first car, I recently got my learners and because my family does not own a manual car, I had to purchase one.
So after many hundreds of hours working at a large supermarket, i had enough to go and buy a car. obviously, being a drift photographer, the logical choice was a Silvia, I decided that I wanted something a bit different though, something you don't see every day.

After checking out this car and going for a drive in it, I fell in love with it. Its just awesome, although sometimes I do get a bit frustrated with it :P

Anyway, onto the car's details

It's 1990 SW20 G-Limited with hardtop
Manual 3S-GE
Fabric Seats
Fog Lights

It's a Japanese import; It was imported in 2007, in Tasmania, and has slowly worked its way up the east coast of Australia until it arrived with me at the start of this year :P

Obviously, some owners have mistreated it, and I have found old for sale ads with my car in it, but so far, I have done next to nothing on this car - bar giving it some loving and starting to recondition it

Aftermarket stuff:
-HKS Hi-Power Muffler
-HKS Springs
-HKS Pod Filter
-Volk Knock-off wheels with locking nuts
-RDA Slotted rotors with EBC Red stuff brake pads
-Clear front indicatiors
-Alpine head unit with clarion 6 point speaker system/layout
-OMP Style Wheel
-Short Shifter and New leather Shift boot with red stiching + Aluminium shift knob

The plan for this car is to be slowly reconditioned. I have started work on the interior by fixing the shifter assembley and the shift boot, The car will hopefully being repainted in the factory black, as it has had a hard life and a terrible debadging process (the guy gave me the badges though) Also new wheels are planned as the ones that are fitted have terrible offset.

I do have a few questions about this car
Apparently the combination of G-Limited, hardtop, manual and black is rare?
Power wise what am I looking at?
If I was to recondition the seats, should I have them Redone in leather or Fabric?

Sorry for the long post, but if you read all (Or at least some of it) thanks for your time!, and there will be more photos coming soon!

I guess the paint isn't that bad, so that can go to the bottom of my list

Tinting is on my list as well as a LSD to stop the under steer

And yes, I really, really wanna take this thing to to a drift event, but I don't know if it will have enough power. It might have enough for the local track, archer field, but that's a really tight track and I don't know how well it would do on that.

Also I see you MR2 Drift and raise you an MR2 Drift team :P

Understeer will always be a problem in this car due to the lack of weight over the front to push the tyres into the ground and find grip. What size wheels are on the front and what tyres are you running F+R?

    Welcome Eric,
Nice choice of car and good luck with the rebuild. You can sort out a lot of understeer with suspension tweeks but a decent diff will help a lot with managing exit out of the corners.
    Cheers

Well done on picking up what looks like a well looked after Sw20. Choosing a hard top was a good idea imo! I had a targa top which used to creak every time I went over a bump and I spent about 3 months fixing leaks too which was pretty frustrating. Enough whinging though! Overall they are great cars and are a lot of fun to drive on the street and on the track. When you get used to the cars pros and cons you will find that you can pass cars you thought you'd have no chance getting around on the street.

Havent updated this in a little while as not much has happened, but some good things are coming!

So we noticed the car was handling funny as the weight shifted arround through the gentlest right handers, took to to a suspension shop and apparently the rear struts are screwed. the best deal we could find for the problem to be fixed was arround $1000. Instead I just opted for coilovers

I purchased some HSD HR Coilovers, the lowest spring rates they could go with were 6kg's, so I chose 6kg's front and 8kg's rear. I have a few mates who have softer springs if necessarry

They should be here tommorow, and will be installed by this weekend. I also purchased some gauges, SAAS Oil Pressure and Vacuum, which are awesome :D

I will upload some pictures later

    Sweet car dood!! Super clean!
Power wise your looking at around 121kw according to the specs of a stock 2nd Gen 3SGE.
I've got a G-Limited Hardtop myself, I used to think hardtops were were rare but not anymore lol, over the past year of ownership I've seen a few hardtops, some G-Limited. I have yet to see a "G" grade Hardtop tho, that's the base model with no P/S, no A/C and wind up windows probably the lightest of them all :D
Drifting either high speed lift off or braking for these cars otherwise wait till the terrain God makes it rain! If you can drift an MR2, you can drift anything hehe

Installed coil overs on the weekend, I had no clue what to do so my mate (who's a semi-pro drifter) said he would help me and I just handed him tools :P I learnt a lot though

After installing the coil overs and adjusting the tightness of some bolts he decided to take it for a test drive. I've never pushed my car as hard as he did, but man you can feel the huge difference that they make!

We conveniently ended up behind a turbo r34 skyline when testing it in some windy corners so we decided to play ;)

We could keep up but due to the tires not being grippy enough and the open centre diff we couldn't quite get through the corners fast enough, but she loves to rev!

Even though the cannon is a bit ricer it still makes a nice noise past 5000 rpm!

So far that has been the best 1200 bucks I've ever spent!

Tl;dr : cars awesome now with new suspension and keeps up with turbo skylines in corners

I will post some pictures later today, she really needs a bath from all the dirt in my mates shed

Do yourself a favour and whack some Federal 595 RS-Rs on it and you'll eat the Riceline through corners and under brakes ;)

Tires are on the list of things to do ;)

Have to sort out brakes as front callipers have to be rebuilt, front rotors and all the pads changed

I want to get new wheels first though, these ones sometimes clip the suspension.

    Any suggestions on wheels?
