Is my clutch on its way out?

Been noticing burning clutch smells lately coming out the back of my car. This morning I was accelerating hard and tried to stick it in 2nd - something went wrong and I couldn't get it into second - lots of resistance. From then on I've had troubles shifting into any gear.

It feels like the clutch isn't all the way in even though I have the clutch pedal pushed down to the floor. I need to really give it some leverage to shift. At first i thought it could be synchros but since it's happening in every gear I doubt it.
I'll also mention that since I got this car, when the clutch isn't engaged and I'm standing still, I can hear slightly abnormal noises coming from the rear. It's not loud, but somewhat noticeable. The noises go away when I engage the clutch.

Now I do realise that a slipping clutch doesn't necessarily mean that I can't shift. In previous cars the symptoms are more like the car not being able to put all the power down so you'll be spinning at like 4000 rpm at say, 100km/h in top gear. I don't have this symptom, however.

Anyone got opinions? Will adjusting the clutch linkage make a difference or will I need to swap my clutch?

Don't like the sounds of those rear 'noises' man,
As a rough guess, I'd say your throwout (thrust) bearing is going or gone...

Could very well be the clutch, but I also wouldn't rule out the hydraulic system (ie slave cylinder).

I just went for another short drive and noticed another noise. When I'm trying to shift, I get reistance and I hear a scratching or squeaky noise. Is thrust bearing issue common on s54 boxes?

Damn. I dont really have the time to do work on my car atm so I guess it'll be sitting here at home for a while.
On another note I've been strongly considering an engine swap. Just filled in an "application for modification of vehicle" form to see just what checkboxes I need to tick when I do a 3SGTE swap.

Edit: might I add that the sound when standing still without clutch engaged is like a rattle.

Very typical symptoms of a failed thrust bearing.

How difficult is it to remove the box from the car? I've not much experience with transaxled cars.

    :D

Yes, that's the one I have my eyes on :)

The only issue really is finding an MR2 E153 for a good price. They seem pretty rare.

I've dropped my gearbox twice in the last week. It's quite easy to get off really. I can do it on my own in 2 1/2 hours. Getting it back in is a pain in the arse but it's do-able with two people. If you want, once the gearbox is back in mine, I can give you a hand.

    Ah ok :)
Seems like a very good price too - if my engine went I'd grab it right away.
The S54 should be OK, as long as you leave it relatively stock...
But yeah you would want the later model E153 too if you were going to change it.

Is this the part I'm looking to replace? Of course I might as well get a new clutch while I'm at it.
