The New SW20 MR2 :)

Well what can I say I couldn't resist this car when it came up on the market. The difference is this won't be a daily driver but I will get it registered eventually.

Its a 1990 SW20 MR2 NA model.

Future Interior Plans:
I'll be looking at getting some nice aftermarket seats, likely either Sparco or Bride with matching seat rails.

Future Engine Plans:
Gen 2 3SGTE
CT20B Turbo or bigger
I am not quite sure how far this engine will go, i'll be likely to buy a blown engine and rebuild it with new pistons, conrods and port the head and port match while i'm there.

Future Suspension Plans:
Coilovers or a decent set of spring/shocks.
Whiteline Front Sway Bar

Future Exterior Plans:
Set of 17" wheels with a decent offset and dish :)
I'll get around to fitting my new Toms Rear Bar and Toms Side Skirts.
Full Respray in Sting Red.

Some may say that this is quite similar to my older SW20 ride, while I am following the same path the expense and trouble of my other car as a daily driver made me turn off keeping it.

Things I'm still looking for:
1990-1992 3sgte Ecu
1990-1992 Body Loom (passenger side to engine fuse box) uncut
3sgte block
Aftermarket ADR Approved seats
Front Passenger Side Red 1/4 Panel

And now for the pics:

Haha well I don't drink or smoke and I don't really go out much so cars are my outlay. I had a SW20 which I converted to Turbo but it ended up costing a lot more than I anticipated on the rebuild and it still was running rough even after 8k into a stock engine rebuild. I just couldn't stand seeing it or driving it anymore. The original one I put about 15k into it and only got 7k for it.

This new car was supposed to be done in time, nothing will be rushed and all the work except for boring the block will be done by a workshop. I have no limit in time as its unregistered and I can work on it when the time is right.

I think it would have been about 1.5 years since I bought the other SW20.

Thanks for your help in the past nuk1ear, i'm sure i'll be asking for more in the near future hahaha.

At the moment i'm still working out what to do for seats. The current ones in there are pretty torn up.

Funny guy but good to see you back in a 2. Hope you haven't bitten off more than you can chew working with a Fairlady & Deuce. Clearly you'll be working with tight spaces in the future.......lol

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

MR2QIK - Oh yeah the 300 is a bit of a handful, its in good nick but I much prefer working on the mr2. The mr2 should be up and running in the next 6 months or so, i'll piece it together bit by bit.

nuk1ear - Yeah man its nice knowing that there is no rush with this project, I can take my time and get it all done nicely. Eventually it will need a full respray so I think the body will be the first thing to prep up. Thanks for the offer to help out too.

Bigh - Thanks mate :) I've got an ADM model so the big plates fit nicely haha. I'll check just jap for some seats too. Thats one thing I have always wanted in a car, aftermarket seats and rails.

Stuka -  i'll def pm you regarding the ecu thanks :)

Oh stamp duty is a joy haha. Nothing like throwing money away hahaha. This cars not too expensive so stamp duty isn't too bad, its the rego that really adds up. I have never renewed the same car twice in the 8 years of car ownership lol. Going on 16 cars so far.

But the best part of all is i'm enjoying every second which makes it all worth while.

I've got a mental plan of what bits are going to be done and when:
I would love to get the body straight and looking nice. Some areas will need to be primed again as they are showing metal from a previous paint scrapper accident. There are a few dents in the roof that I want to get attended to.
Gotta get that missing 1/4 panel sorted as its looking a bit nasty atm. I'd prob get another headlight cover too as the one that I have has a tiny pin dent which is quite noticable. I may be able to get it out with a dolly and hammer which will be resprayed anyway
Interior is going to come out, i'm not quite sure if I will keep the stock seats for now, one seat is pretty torn up.
I will need a new gearstick surround too as this has cracked, I found the replica trd gearknobs for nice and cheap on ebay $30.
Drivers Side Carpet is looking a bit drab (wear on the foot section carpet down to the floor) so this will need to be replaced soon.
I have a boss kit coming tomorrow so that means I can put my fancy dished ebay wheel on finally after 1 year lol.
Still waiting to source suspension parts at the moment, not sure to go coilovers yet. Coilovers would be nice as its just a weekender and its easy to get them cheap for that really racy feel.
I'll need to rip out that engine soon, it would prob be easier to remove it bit by bit while its in the car, then its just a matter of dropping it down. If I can get the head off and the gearbox I may be able to remove it without having to lift the car (lift the engine upwards) but that is only if the crane can go that high.

    A few updates for everyone,
    Engine Progress
I am still in the works of planning this engine build, I still think i'll stick with the stock ecu for now but build up the motor enough to be able to do an aftermarket ecu and a bigger turbo in the future if required. I am actually piecing the motor together bit by bit which is a heap of fun. I love sourcing out parts so its all part of the fun.
I will be port matching the intake and exhaust manifold, while also cleaning up any burrs that may affect flow. I have also planned to do my own port and polish work, while leaving the intake surface not quite as smooth as the exhaust ports.

I'm looking for low down torque so the factory cams and stock head components should suffice nicely. I will use the cams out of my 3sge gen 2 into it to bring in a bit more power ater 4500-5000rpm.
Turbo wise i'll be using a CT20B again, I could go bigger but other supporting mods would be required (including tuning) so I am hoping to get the main part done first.
    Suspension Progress
I'm working through either getting a set of Tein Coilovers or a decent set of springs/shocks. The great thing with coilovers will be the ability to adjust height when required, while the springs and shocks may end up a bit cheaper in the long run.
    Wheels Progress
I am debating whether to get another set of GTR/GTS-T wheels, but this time round I would like something a bit different. I'm looking at 17" 7.5" on the fronts and 8.5" or 9.5" at the back.

    Body Progress
There are always more dents then you think, I found a few on the roof which will need to be looked at. Both Rear 1/4 above the foot well have scrape marks with a small crease running horizontally. I noticed that the sills near the foot well also have been pushed in a bit but i'm still optimistic I can get it all straight again and looking schmick.
I'm still on the hunt for a passenger side 1/4 in red, once thats on the car will slowly start falling into place.

I will be doing all the prep work while a place down in Ringwood will be doing the respray for me. I am likely to stick with the factory 3E5 colour, I am not sure if this particular colour would have been 2 pac back in the 90's? Either way this time round it will get a nice chunky coat of 2 pac. I can't wait to see it looking all nice and shmick.

    Interior Progress
The seat has exposed metal from the frame where the foam has worn away quite considerably. This is no problems as the seats are coming out anyway. overall the interior is all complete and intact, unfortunately the dash has started peeling around the air vents but this is to be expected. Its not the first time i've had to take a dash out haha. The Drivers Side Carpet under the brake pedal is completely worn through to the floor pan so this is one portion that will definitely be replaced.

I had access to a Rug Doctor the last few days but someone had rented out the wand attachment so we were only able to do our carpets in the house doh.

    More to come soon :)

DEFINITELY get coilovers man. I'm supidly happy that my car came with them. They take ages to get everything right (height rebound etc) but well worth the effort! and as you mentioned you can customise the height for the optimum look.

rims - Adam is selling some nice ones off his car on the forums.  Are you doing the dent pushing yourself? I need to do one bit on my car.

DEFINITELY go aftermarket seats - they make the car feel really exotic! if u can afford it get leather too hehe.

Also car mats are a good investment to cover carpet holes.  I have car mats in my car (and a second rubber mat under the drivers side to protect the carpet) :) and you can always sell them when you sell the car :)
