brake pad/brake type for sw20
trying to buy brake pads for sw20 91 mr2, however not sure what brakes i have, and was hoping somebody could tell me/ car is a 91 sw20, brake discs are the smaller ones (approx 260mm - pre December91). I just bought 4 new rotors off RDA and having trouble finding which brake pads, or more importantly which model brakes(calipers) I have on the car. Pads tried : I have tried DBA308 (too small) and the DBA1227's are too small. I think they 'might' be the DBA1352 (which nobody has in stock), for the front and supercheap told me they cannot get the corresponding rear pads anyway for this model. If anyone knows what I'm on about or an easy way to identify or differentiate b/w the different brake models, any enlightenment would be appreciated. Cheers from the newby

Have a look on the caliper itself and tell us what numbers it says on it. If the 1227 is too small its likely you have the later model calipers which use the 1352, which also has alternate numbers 0995, 2995, 3995. Let me know if you need help sourcing I can get EBC locally or get you something branded from japan if you want.

I have recently fitted genuine Toyota pads to my 90 model (small brakes) along with new RDA rotors. For general street use or fast cruising they are great, giving smooth braking with no fade. AFAIK there are only two brake sizes, pre and post late '91. Early small brakes should have 16V cast into the caliper, with rotors around 260 mm diam. Easy to look up the pads part number for your model at http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html I found these much cheaper to buy (4 pads cost about $80 USD) if you get them from Lithia Toyota Springfield. Great to deal with BTW. http://www.lithiatoyotaparts.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=searchCatalogOEM&siteid=215542

cheers mate, I think that means I've got later front and older back brakes, but all 4 discs are the smaller size (approx 260). Do you know if the newer callipers can be used with the smaller discs. I will drop you a line once I know which pads for sure anyway, thanks

cheers for the links mate, and the heads up about the RDA rotors, it is good to know, they only cost me $155 clams for all four rotors (260mm), I thought that was cheap and was abit worried that the quality might not be there. yeah 16V is cast on the back brakes, and on the front is has something like ' TOY V016' , there's a few other markings on the front ones, will need to have a look in the light, but dfinitely not stamped 16V like the back ones, and I think due to the pad sizes and the info from dylmrt, I've prob got the newer front brakes and the older back brakes. Cheers for the help.

Ferodo 'Target' pads are decent too. Repco sell em for a good price.

MASTERPO888 cheers Mr Turbo, do you know if you can run the later calipers on the smaller (260mm) discs? I'm pretty sure it would be No. But in all honesty, I really wouldn't bother going to later rear calipers/rotors. If you want to stop better, pad material and a pair of slotted rotors goes a long way. Yes later ones will dissipate more heat though.

I was talking about the front brakes in particular, I have the smaller rotors, and I'm just trying to work out if the newer calipers can be used with them, or only with the bigger rotors, as I am trying to identify which brakes I have on the front. If they can't be used I know I haven't got the new callipers, and if they can be used I'm now thinking maybe I should get the bigger rotors for the front. What do you think?

just called repco, ferodo are 60 clams, and the hd bendix are also on special for 60clams (normally about 107clams for the 1352's). If i can score the bendix heavy duty for 60 would you recommend over the ferodo?

What size rotor were you running previously on the front? I doesn't make any sense to have larger calipers/rotors on the front than the rear, the braking would be way out of balance. It is also possible that you may have the correct small front calipers anyway. IMO genuine Toyota pads FTW for best results with your new RDA rotors, forget aftermarket.

I have the small early model brakes, and I have just done some checking and found that the markings on my front calipers are different to those on the rear calipers. My rear calipers have 16V on them. But my front calipers have the markings AISIN 36T25 on them. And also at the bottom is marked L4 and O6E I believe that the later model larger front calipers would have Aisin 36T30 on them.

car is a frankenstein, I bought it 'as is' off ebay for 4k. It still has the brakes on it that I bought it with, and the new rotors I bought are simply replacements (260mm). I don't mind if it's a frankenstein or 'wrong', the brakes work and I just need to replace front rotors and pads for RWC. Got rotors, just need to find the pads, gonna buy 1352's and see how they go this week. Cheapest is best as will be replacing brakes entirely in next 12 months.

cheers heaps for that mate, I will check the markings on mine as soon as I get home. Do you know the brake pad numbers that you use on your brakes, are they the 308's or 1227's?
