EOI: Quick ratio steering pinion

A guy in ireland has had these made.  I have  been in contact with him throughout the process and sent him through some detailed images of the original pinion.  He had a LHD quick ratio pinion in hand to see what modifications had been made.

The current issue is that your personal pinion would have to be sent to him for the manufacturer to modify.  This means shipping to ireland and back and being without the pinion.  I myself have a spare, so that doesn't bother me.  I assume its going to bother a large majority of people though.  Price looks like it'll be in the region of $400 + freight each way, so getting pretty damn exxy.

Apparently there are two new parts that are used on the existing pinion.  I have asked the guy who organised to get these made if it is would be possible to send me the parts and I could modify the standard pinion as required for quicker turn around.  When I know whats involved and what he is willing to sell me the required parts for I will be able to make a call on that.

Anyway, who would be interested in such an item (and has $400 to spend on it).  Lock to lock changes from 3.2 to 2.6 turns I believe so I can get some base numbers to get pricing on.  The $400 figure is for a group buy of 10.  less then this and they want substantially more so I wouldn't be interested and getting a lesser quantity.

If this all isn't going to work out with this guy I might see bout getting some of these made locally if I can find the time.

Cheers,

James.

I don't have power steering so that sucks. On the plus side it's one less thing trying to drain my wallet.

How about offering an exchange method if you have some spare pinions ? Someone who doesn't want their MR2 off the road for long could pays extra e.g.. $120.00 for an already modified pinion and when they send you their original pinion you could refund a certain percentage e.g. $80.00 back for the faster service. Give them say two weeks after delivery to install and return original and if not returned you keep the $120.00.

Not really feasible.  I only have a c ouple of spares and new price from Toyota is pretty crazy, so if I don't get cores returned, I end up in the muck.

In other news, the installation of the parts that the manufacturer can provide is very simple.  A press is about the only piece of special equipment required.  The saving on buying the parts only isn't sufficient for me to even consider offering the service for others however an option is sending the replacement pieces only and then removing and fitting them to your own pinion.

This would make for a down time of only a day if you had everything ready to go.

Have a chat to Craig @ Extreme Custom Engineering mate, I am sure he could knock something up for similar dollars as well as being local.

OK guys -Totenkopf- has given me permission to give my input on the Quick Steer power steering pinion.

I have been in touch with -Totenkopf- over the past three months by email. I have kept him up to date on the different ways of having the pinion upgraded. I have based the RHD version on the LHD version that I own, but it will be produced in a different way to keep costs down.

-Totenkopf- believes that it would be beneficial to you guys to have just the new parts shipped to you to save down time on your MR2.
The only thing this requires is a press which most engineering places would have.
The basics of the upgrade goes like:
Remove the steering rack and remove power steering pinion.
Take pinion and upgraded parts to a place with a press and have them disassemble the pinion using the press.
Install upgraded parts into pinion using press.
Install Quick Steer power steering pinion into the steering rack.
    Install steering rack.
Don't forget to top up power steering fluid.
    Job done.

I currently have nine people interest in this product of which one has paid full from the UK and one has paid a deposit in Ireland.

The pinion will go into production once I have received deposits for ten pinions. Once the pinions have been manufactured I will require the rest of the money for the pinion to be released from the manufacturer.

    Prices are for parts only.
$372.00 for parts only - self assembly.
    $107.00 deposit required.
Payments to made to PayPal account martinjpod@eircom.net

Yesterday I asked Mr2boost who is in the US if he had any video footage of his converted lhd MR2 with a quick steer pinion. Here's what he had to say.

"I am sorry, but I do not.

BUT, my son-in-law has a stock 1991 MR2 turbo that is exactly like my 1991 MR2 turbo (well his is SMG & mine is CR & his has a slightly different stereo & his has fog lights - other than that all the same options).

We auto-cross regularly & the benefits of the pinion in AX is dramatic. I know I prefer to drive mine over his because it is easier to slalom with mine (& he agrees). It takes the lock to lock turn from around 3.5 turns to around 2.6 turns & the steering "feel" is better too.

Also, I hope to get a GoPro camera soon & I will then post up some video showing me in the AX & then him & show how the steering wheel is moved back & forth. So, thanks for the idea.

But, sorry I don't know of any videos off hand & mine will have to wait till around Christmas probably for me to get the GoPro.

    Daniel".
