neal bates mr2 was a gen2 motor i think. so if they can rev to 8200rpm i should be able to with the uprated springs etc. I guess we will have to wait and see where my power band dies. No point revving if the power isnt there . Definitely looking forward to starting the car to hear that idle, and just sitting at traffic lights listening. Also with the cam, the motor should theoretically sound different right? (in the rev range) I looked on ebay and those rods can be had for about $340 delivered. Ill purchase them soon.

before you buy the rods by themselves i'd recommend getting a price from gorilla for the rods as well as ACL bearings and ARP hardware and a gasket kit, also all your other misc rebuild parts like water&oil pumps etc be cheaper to get a package then all your parts individually

I already have a water pump as well as VRS kit and some random bits and pieces, but an oil pump isnt a bad idea. what other random things can i buy that will make my motor better? Ill talk to gorilla see what they have to offer :).

Check out the article on 3SGE mods on Road and track website. My friend said if I was ever gonna swap a motor may as well port/polish and upgrade valve springs for ~$500 i think

yes fit gen3 pistons,i think gen3 have a 10.3:1, it's a small increase but added with a thinner HG you'll bump it up more. dunno what size the stock HG for the NA is but if it's the same as the turbo i think they're 1.2mm. cometics are 0.8.
Have a look at the toyota 11115-SE100 gasket , someone said that they are / were 0.5 mm or a shade less than that , in the old lingo he said they are 18.5 thou , i think that is in imperial measure , even so it seems very thin . may be just the thing to help the comp up .

Mate this thing is going to be an absolute machine, can't wait to see the progress. You will no doubt be able to keep this car well into your turbo friendly licence years. My most recent examples of motors with varying lift and cam duration (specifically on the intake cam) was the zzt 231 which has vvtli. The difference once vvtli raised the lift and duration was a night and day difference. And the sound was stunning. In America they seem to get some decent results from running a staggered cam setup so they would use an aftermarket cam on the intake and leave the exhaust standard. Port and polish can be quite pricey as there is a lot of manual labour involved. Could be something to look into if all the other items are done. The ecu will allow you to tune the engine for all those modifications so much better than the stock ecu.

more lift!! i still reckon shimless buckets and more lift is the way to go. you will look back and be all like "why didnt i go for more lift" if you dont. you are probably only going to build up a 3SGE once in your life. go mental on this one, no regrets. i really regret not going nuts and making a mental 3SGE with my old car.

Bare in mind that the car still should be able to be driven down to the shops.. i dont mind if its less user friendly cause i like a challenge. I just like that its going to be the ultimate road going gen2 N/A in my area atleast :P. Especially considering ive got most of the supporting parts like LSD and lightweight flywheel already there. Next stop is adjustable coilovers, after the motor ofcourse!
