While the inlet manifold is out I decided to clean it up Before: Wire wheeled and spray paint the plate: Polished the metal (that will be seen when its back in) and a dodge attempt at painting the writing on: It's good from far but far from good. Will do though.

Looks good. Was this done with alloy polish and steel wool?

Quick update: Having a nightmare of a time trying to get the harmonic balancer pulley bolt out. Tried my 500nm of torque impact driver and it didn't budge. Did the old breaker bar against the control are and turning it over trick with no luck. Hired a impact driver, that turned out to only be 580nm of torque, which didn't get it to move. I've charged up the battery so will give that a crack again tonight with the rattle gun at the same time. Failing that I will hire another impact driver (1000nm of torque) which should get it done. Until then most things have stalled. I did receive my new JDM mirrors in the mail on Friday so if anyone is looking to buy ADM mirrors I will be offloading mine soon enough (one white one primed)

Thinking about leaving the mirrors black for now: Got my timing belt kit to (although I won't be using this belt):

Few parts have arrived: - Engine mount inserts - Adjustable camgears - Gen3 cams (using the exhaust) - 3sge intake cam - Gates racing timing belt - Kangaru wastegate actuator - ARP head studs - Injectors Harmonic Balanced gone: Spent my weekend cursing at the cams. Exhaust cam cam off with little effort. Inlet on the other hand...

Good to see you're making progress. Yea my harmonic balancer would not come off with ease. Ended up needing air powered impact driver to get it off. If you get the opportunity throw some draft stopper behind the JDM side mirrors as they let an annoying air noise get into the cabin. Also great idea with the intake manifold. I might do the same to mine if it comes off easy haha.

Thanks for the tip on the mirrors, I will do that for sure. Finished wire wheeling and repainting the front intrusion bar: Also got the oil pump and sump off: Had a box of gear arrive from Partsouq yesterday as well. Well priced compared to other options and super quick shipping from UAE. Definitely worth a look if you need genuine gear.

Truflow water pump and 5sfe oil pump installed: Got a lot of gasket goo to scrape off before the sump can go back on.

With the Trueflow water pump did you take notice if the impellor is of pressed metal construction or of a cast material with foil shaped impellor blades ? Also could you count the number of teeth on both the water pump pulley and on the 5SFE oil pump pulley ? Quite interested in these answers. Thanks.

Hey falcon, I can have a look at my same water pump on the shelf tonight and get back to you, seeing his is now in. It’s the standard 3sgte style impeller, not the once off design of the stxxx Celica pump (the one that’s different to all other gens - said to be better but no data to back up why) style. If you need to improve coolant flow / temps, IMO change water pump as per major device (including the back housing) and only run the high flow lower temp thermostat (available for both gens through ATS racing and other suppliers). Cogs. Oil pumps 5sfe = gen 3 = gen 4, all have 25 teeth cogs resulting in a gen 3 timing belt needed. Gen 2 oil pump cog has 27 teeth. Based on the cog dictates the timing belt needed. Pumps. The late model 5sfe oil pump can be used on a gen 2 3sgte, matching the block and sump (not cog). It is a common upgrade and IMO should be done for all gen2 owners. Late model 5s oil pump has a deeper 15.x mm gator instead of the gen2/3 13.x gator. The gen3 used a smaller cog to up the speed of the pump to combat the prior issue. The gen4/5 has a 15.x gator and small cog however can not be used with a gen 2/3 due to not matching the sumps. If you don’t get the above right with the cog / tensioner / timing belt etc, often the camshaft timing will skipping a tooth because of low tension on the timing belt. Oil relief valves are stock in above. ATS Racing does a custom late model 5s oil pump 15.x gator for gen 2, with the correct pulley as well as the relief valve modification.

To rephrase what Falcon was asking, does the water pump have Aisin stamped on the water pump housing? I found out recently the late model 5sfe oil pump also has a crank sensor built in, great for those using aftermarket ECUs i.e. more accurate readings.

Truflow is a cost effective alternative to the original Toyota/aisin at a current delivered price of around $160 Aussie dollars, that includes the back housing, gaskets and o rings. Toyota part price is substantially higher, plus gaskets etc. The metal used on the truflow has a different surface finish and colour shade to the Toyota/aisin. There is no stamps on the pump of aisin/Toyota. Both in the picture above and on mine, it seems they may have removed what might have been a stamp of the manufacturer by polishing / grinding the surface in one spot. I could not gain a picture of the inside impeller. I can see inside and as stated earlier it is the standard 3sgte design in all previous and later model 3sgte engines, not the once off produced design of the gen3 celica design that was discontinued after it’s design. I had a 5s late model oil pump with crank angle sensor position / gen2 sump. If running an aftermarket ecu, you need the crank angle sensor and the 5s crank cog with back plate for the sensor.
