Matts 2GR-FE SW20

So after years of owning my MR2 its just about respectable enough to make a showroom thread for. Not that all that much has changed with appearances.

Original for sale pic

Sadly after about 4 months of owning it my head gasket failed.
I sorted this out with a bit of an overhaul, new MLS head gasket, gates racing timing belt, new water pump and gaskets, all new water lines, reconditioned radiator, new turbo water line etc.

Engine bay afterwards.

Finally got it semi respectable again.

After doing all this and the car running well again i decided to buy an ex members car that they wrote of. I parted most thing but kept these.

Tein Super Streets

Custom 3 inch exhaust (also had a custom dump and cat just never took pics)

After a quick clean

The poor written of MR

Solid non adjustable whiteline swaybar.

Now after all this i thought my car was sorted and getting respectable. I was even just about to buy a new turbo and had just thrown in an ebay greddy style intercooler.
Then on a club run i all of a sudden had massive over heating issues again. I spent months looking for the cause and the car ended up sitting around for about 6 months due to lack of funds.

Turns out the shop who did my head gasket didnt bother facing the block when the put my MLS gasket on which cause the gasket to blow out again. Turns out my block was slightly warped between cylinders 2&3.

Pic of car after sitting for 6 months my wiper blades became bill holders it sat for so long.

Another 6 months later I decided to pull the car out of the garage and get things sorted. With the view of spending about 10-15k on either a 2gr-fe conversion or forged internals and turbo kit i went to see Road and Track who are local for me. Full write up found here http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=139:2gr-v6-conversion-for-sw20-mr2&catid=45:general&Itemid=43

So for the fun bits...

Engine in and wiring 3/4 complete

Custom K&N Induction Kit

2grfe in minus airfilter and cover

2grfe in with covers all complete

Current specs
1992 SW20
- 2gr-fe from a 2009 aurion with apparently 9000k's
- 1.5 way mechanical trd LSD
- Custom made induction kit with a 2004 FPV enclosed pod as the base
- Custom mandrel bent Y pipe running twin 200cel pre-cats
- Custom headers (Gouky US forums)
- Custom engine mount adapter (Gouky US forums)
- Tein super street coilovers
- Whiteline non adjustable front swaybar
- Custom clutch and 6kg lightened flywheel (Road and Track)
- 3vz e153 gearbox modified to suit (Road and Track)
- Falken FK452's all round 215 front + 225 rears

Performance
First run on the dyno saw 244rwhp and 386ftlb's of torque tho for some reason the shop did this in 3rd gear so im pretty sure the results are a bit out.
Its obvious that a lot of turbo MR2's are going to make more power but the drive-ability of the 6 is amazing. Im aiming at getting around 300rwhp with tuning and mods in the future and will probably leave it at that for a street/track car.

Future mods come 2011
- Lenso d1r wheels in 17x8 and 17x9
- greddy emanage to control fuel (necessary to raise the rev limit from 6400 to 7200) OR a standalone setup as a piggyback to control everything bar the drive by wire.
- Ebc yellow stuff pads, DBA slotted rotors and braided lines
- Evo 8/9 recaro's
- 4 point harness
- Semi slicks (still deciding on brand)
- TRD 300km/h speedo

Ill have more pics of the engine etc completed along with the exhaust shortly ill just need to stop driving this thing and take some pictures :D. Ill be doing track days starting Feb on a monthly basis and will be videoing all of them so you can expect plenty of footage in the future.

Some quick pics of the exhaust setup since it was on the hoist anyway...

    This thing sounds great!

I was quiet envious when you brought it to the QLD Christmas run.

Thanks mate, it was a shame i had to leave early i know a lot of the guys wanted a proper look.
Probably a good thing that i didnt drive in the wet any further, turns out i was running something like +40 toe in. Im pretty sure i aqua planed on every puddle we saw that morning. Probably didnt help that my front tires were shagged as well.

I can vouch for the sound of the thing nearing redline. Sounded way more exotic than it actually is (no offense intended - still a Toyota motor after all). Will be an absolute machine with 300rwhp and gobs of torque to play with.
