Police bluff?
I had a nasty experience with the law today. The wife and I were out for a pleasant drive in the countryside and were in a 70kph zone and rounded a corner and spotted a cop on the side of the road 200 mtrs. away. So I instantly glanced at the speedo which showed 74kph. Anyway he pulled me over and asked in an arrogant manner how fast I thought I was going and I told him that I checked my speedo and would not have been doing more than 75kph.
He then started ranting and raving about speeding drivers and said that he was an expert in estimating speed and that I would have been going at least 80 to 85kph. However he did not have a radar gun or any proof to substantiate this.
He then checked my licence and breathalised me which was fine then continued to castigate me about speeding etc. Then he said 'I will let you off this time but watch yourself in the future'. I was nearly going to say to him that he had no option but to let me off as he had no proof I was speeding anyway, but what did I say---'yes officer, I am sorry, I should know better, thanks'.
Maybe he picked on me coz I was in an open top sports car (Mazda MX5) but I really feel like reporting him for his arrogant attitude and criticism of me when I feel I had done little wrong.
I could have told him that I have been driving for 50 years with very few speeding fines, was once quite heavily involved in motor sport and driver training etc. but maybe he would just think I was being a smart arse.
Has this sort of thing happened to any of you guys and what approach did you take?

i know i am young, but i have had my running ins with the law in this side of things (stuff i choose not to publicly talk about) but one thing i can say is that when they have no proof, they try to make you admit to things, hence in your case, he asked how fast you thought you where going, in a 70 kmh zone you generally have a ten percent buffer ie 77kmh to where it is up to the officer most times to let you go or give you a speeding ticket, hence if you said 80, he could have given you a speeding ticket for speeding 10 kmh over hence why he said he reckons 80 - 85 if you deny something, and they have no proof, the matter goes no where example in my case an officer pulled me over at 2am and claimed i was street racing with a car next to i was dumb founded to this claim and said to the officer on the night, i wasnt racing, at the most i was doing 80kmh (in a 70 zone) he couldn't prove either (he had no inboard camera or speed camera) so he hands me a CAN (court attendance notice) i go to court, and seeing as on the night i straight out said i did not street race but i admitted to doing 80, i got a speeding ticket, where if i didn't say a thing, the officer wouldn't have been able to prove a thing and i wouldn't have gotten a thing

Thanks for that v6mr2. I haven't been pulled over by a cop for years so now I know to never admit to speeding because these days your conversation is recorded and if they haven't got a radar gun or speed camera to prove your speed they cannot book you, however, apparently they will book you if you agree that you were speeding as you say. It's no wonder he had the sh-ts, coz luckily I only admitted to 75kph.
Handy information indeed!

Hmmm surprised to hear this, I didn't think you fitted into the demographic they usually target wiz. I would have thought you would have gotten more respect than that.

Back in the days of the Honda Prelude - was pulled up for racing another car as we were side by side and simply had fart cans on both cars. Neither of us was racing and it was a 60 zone... purely getting up to the speed limit in which I was mildly in front of the other car but wasn't accelerating hard. This cop comes out of nowhere - literally not another car on the road and pulls both of us over at a set of lights. Claims we were doing in excess of 80km/h and saying things like "I'm sick of you young hoons thinking you own the road - just sick of it". I was like that's good and all mate, but I was literally doing 60km/h with no intention of racing the guy. He let us off with a warning after a breath test and license check. On another note - was just pulled up speeding (fair enough this time) - I was at the bottom of quite a steep hill proceeding to go up another hill when I get pulled over by a cop who's jumped out from the top of the hill in front of me and pulled me up. The hill has a crest then another smaller hill that dips down. He's pulled me up from just behind the top of the second crest - in which you CAN'T see the hill at all (none of it - jumped out to see myself). He reckons I was doing 93 at the top and 89 at the bottom of the hill. Was in 5th gear at the time the entire way without using the brakes. Because there was no sign, no car, didn't see him (hiding) and I simply can't get my head around how he's actually seen me go down the hill without me seeing him - is this entrapment? I thought the police aren't allowed to hide and need to be in clear sight when raising revenue?

I think ... not 100% sure ... that in Aus they don't haven entrapment laws cause you still "broke the law." Thats why some cops will rev their undercover cars at you at the light to see if you will give it a boot full and then impound your car. They are sneaky pricks and can be real arseholes. The "good" cops seem to be few and far between now. Also from my experience the younger they are the more they seem to have to prove something.

Well last tuesday the radiator tank split in my GT4 celica so the following day I rego'd the EVO to use for a few days and come Thursday I was pulled over on my way to work. Got breath tested and then told that my car was defective and to pop the bonnet. First word the came out of his Mouth your blow off valve is venting to Atmosphere Well after pointing out that I'm 40 and the car was Blue slipped and rego'd the day before that he better Quit while he was ahead otherwise I would see him in court so all became to hard and said goodbye. Unfortunately Police have been told to become Glorified parking officers rather than police which is sad Cheers Daniel

+1 exactly what my mates lawyer told us when we where in court for my above matter 'never admit to anything, unless they can prove you wrong' exact words spoken via the lawyers mouth and in regards to entrapment, for the police, anything goes. the local hang out, wich is krispe kremes and mcdonalds in my area, has regular visits from taipan, where they block off the exits to the carpark where everyone sits, and pulls over every car to search for a form of defect, ive seen mothers with children get given a ticket for having their foglights on. like cmon? i understand if you did that to a P plater who is there for trouble/hooning/being a menace to the public that also goes there but a mother? fair enough they are trying to keep us safe on the streets from idiots/ reckless drivers/ing but isn't it getting a bit to far?

Whats the diff man, illegal is illegal. Did you know the biggest number of unlicensed people on the road is the middle aged women group. The know they are less likely to get pulled over and run the risk.
I think it poo poo that because we get stereotyped we get pulled over more, equal rights i say.

I'm a rating one for life, and I've earned it. 14 years with no claims. My Mr is plenty modded and insurance is CHEAP. If you have 3 stacks by 20 you should pay more.
Anyway bit of a thread jack there.
On a side note unlicensed middle aged mums will have no insurance.
