Gauge Pod Legalities

Hey all,

I'm looking at getting a vacuum gauge at some stage, is there any specific legalities against gauge pods?
I saw a couple i wouldn't mind investigating in:

The points they raise are usually to do with obstructing vision, and hitting your head on it in an accident etc.

Is the one you show sw20 specific or generic?

    Cheers

I guess it depends on how much it intrudes into the interior, and how inline it is with the pillar, ie if its aligned well, it shoudln't obstruct more than the pillar itself.

They do seem to vary a fair bit in design, some are down low towards the base of the pillar, and I have seen some quite high and poking into the interior a fair bit, which is quite intrusive.

Maybe you could just go a single pod down low on the pillar?

    Cheers

Last time I cheeked it was also illegal to have any extra gauges that are mounted higher the original ones in Victoria, Basically none on the pillar

Technically if I could tuck one in the very bottom corner of the a pillar, it will still be lower than the highest point on the dash cluster.

I wish regulations were a bit more relaxed at times, I think its the trouble makers that make us all suffer :
The more these things are brought to the attention of Vicroads roads and police (as an issue or defect) the more chance they will see it as a recurring issue.

I have great respect for those laws which are intended to keep us safe, without them we wouldn't have seat belts, air bags etc

I have the twin pod on the A-pillar with electronic gauges and haven't had an issue with the police - albeit I haven't been pulled over in quite some time (touch wood!). I also believe that electronic ones are the only legal type we're allowed inside the cabin?

The twin pod a pillar is a definate 'fail' in nsw. Something about head impact zone.

I got pulled over on the Centenery HWY and had my ass reamed cause I had two pillar mounted gauges. In QLD anything above the height of the dash is a no-no. Head impact zone according to popo.

the only place where it is legal is the NT (unless WA is the same?)
SA have the same restrictions on pillar gauges. even though mine sits behind the line of my steering wheel (which is legal), it can still be deemed illegal due to obstruction of view.
it sucks, but thats life sometimes.

Anything that replaces a padded portion of the interior will get you in trouble. I used to have similar to your pic and couldn't see a thing around it. I would try one to see about visibility and take your chances regarding defects. I think you'll be in trouble though
