3SGE NA Thread - Current Topic 3SGE HKS CAMS
Hey MR2 Australia, Is there anyone on this forum that has tried to get power out of a Gen 2 3sge?
I know like anything there is always potential.
I ended up getting a 3sge gen 2 head in excellent condition and wanted to start building up some pieces.
I do understand I could have started with a 3sgte and I would have HUGE potential for power, but my idea at the moment is to see what I can get by using the original motor that came with the car.
I do know that I could also easily chuck in a 3sge beams but i've got a liking to this gen 2 3sge quite a bit.

"easily" "chuck in" "3SGE beamms" should never go together haha! You don't get squat other than the novelty imo.. but I personally wouldn't even touch a 3SGE.. I've got a bathurst with a gen 3, 3SGE it is a good daily and easy on the fuel but power wise, wouldn't really wanna touch as it WILL cost an arm and a leg for like next to no benefits compared to a turbo/v6.
just my 2 cents

There's something appealing about a little N/A screaming it's head off. 3SGE on cams would go alright. A 4AGE kept me entertained for years before I got a turbo (skyline).

MR2 = too heavy for a 3S-GE.

individual throttle bodies and a programmable ecu, very aggressive high lift cams, shim under bucket conversion, bump up the compression, get a custom 4:1 manifold.
$$$$ but it will be awesome to drive

Yea the 3sgte is easier but its not the driving feel that I am after. I've had a few 3sgte motors in the past and they are very nice, but I am looking for something different in this car. From reading that article MRVirgin mentioned, there is some benefits that would definitely outweigh the initial cost of an NA build.
I'm looking at getting some aftermarket cams over the next few weeks, I scored myself a very low km 3sge head that I will use to build up this motor :)
Its still going to be streetable but mild enough to not require hugely drastic
- 270 degree duration Cams with mild enough lift to still be able to use shim over bucket gen 2 set up - Port and Polish head - Extractors, suitably matched 2.25" exhaust and a decent flowing muffler set up

Sounds like a plan. You do it. Tell us all how it goes and if your happy with it, I'll do the same. It's not one of those bang for buck builds.. But I like the feel of N/A.

go for a 2.2 stroker. base your design on the toms F3 engine.

Wasn't the stroker kit like $5000? I think a n/a build with max hp in mind would cost around $20000?

The idea with my set up was to go for something mild enough to still make use of piggyback equipment.
That Toms engine has a decent amount of lift on those cams - 10.5mm
173 kW @ 6,800? Those specs would have been from the original motor without those modifications?

Put on a supercharger. Twinscrew or Centrifugal.

I think 110-115kw at the wheels would be fun. How much power are you looking for?
