Syncros
My new box crunches into 3rd from 4th gear, but not from 2nd to 3rd. I'm giving it back to the gearbox place as soon as possible.
I have an account with toyota so i can get parts at trade prices and i was wondering exactly what to get? Also which syncros should be replaced? ive been looking at this website.. but I have no idea what im looking for. Oh how depressing this is just got the quaife in there last week!
Anybody that can give me some advice.. The problem is MUCH worse when the car is cold, but when it warms up its not as bad, but this takes a fair amount of driving, and i really shouldnt have to put up with it.

what oil are you using mate it makes a big difference if you use the right oil. you NEED a GL4 rated 75w-90 oil (not many around) next best option is 75w-85 which is easier to find
cheers

+1 on oil. I just changed from Penrite hypoid 80w90 to Redline Lightweight Shockproof... Such a difference. I'd crunch going into 2nd and 3rd with Penrite but now i only get a slight notch going into 2nd. After 2,000km on it i'm thinking the shifting is getting a bit smoother too. Its fracking expensive, but worth it imo.

You'll need 3rd gear sychronizer ring at a minimum. Who knows what else could possibly use replacing though.
PN 33367-32010 or 33368-32020 dependant on year model (Look at the Ring, Sychronizer No. 2 listing on the site you linked).

I used this oil in my other gearbox, it was great. The crunching will get worse won't it? I should use my warranty while I still have it? It's only been a week and 200km.
Do you guys reckon my gearset from the old gearbox would still be ok? It was perfect before the diff started to go.

thanks totenkopf. I'll talk to the guy on Monday. He said it all looked good when he checked it out when he was putting the diff in. How much would syncros cost? Just the parts. Is the site I listed correct pricing?

I doubt he will do the synco's under warranty. If I was paying to have the box removed & dis-assembled, I'd replace all the syncro rings 33367/68/69. They simply aren't beefy enough to do the job, and will most probably be in various stages of wear. Particularly if running the wrong grade oil.

I'll try my best to bargain with the fellow. I still have my other gearbox witch felt like an absolute dream to shift etc. Im thinking of giving it to the gearbox guy to change over the gearsets. But yes Surok im so glad i went for the quaife. its wonderfull.

Get them to check shift forks if the box is coming apart. My aw11 box was crunchy 1-2, turned out to be a worn selector fork.

Ill mention that to him too. Thanks for the tip. But it really does feel like a syncro problem.
