MR2 inspection?

Gday guys,

I live in Darwin at the moment with my SW20 Gen2 Turbo. I'm heading down to Adelaide early next year and, frankly, and quite worried about Regency.

I bought the car in Sydney (registered in ACT) had no problems getting it through the pits here in Darwin, and have never been defected in two years of ownership.

Now, i understand i will have to go through regency to get it into SA rego.

what may be a problem? and what (if anything) have people been pulled up on?

i currently have the following that i think MAY be a problem.

-Tein coilovers (110mm at lowest point)
-HKS silent single exit exhaust.
-aftermarket dump pipe, so no cat, but my original dump was also gutted. so i dont have a cat at all.
-boost gauge on the A pillar?
- pod filter?

any info would be great.... because if i have to start chasing up standard springs... i'm not going to be too impressed.

I brought my SW20 into SA rego from Victoria and had to go through the same process. I grew up in Adelaide and have had a few run ins with ol'regency.

Everything you've listed will be an instant fail. I may be wrong but I think they'll pick you up for having damper adjustment despite being legal ride height . There's no way you'll pass your exhaust or A pillar gauges. The pod filter will pass if it's bolted to the body.

When I transferred my SW20 over it was completely unmodified except for 16" wheels/tyres that fell within the lines for rolling diameter. Despite being an unassuming wheel/tyre setup they took down the details and calculated that they were legal. The inspection they carry out when you transfer over is supposed to only be to check your engine/vin number for registration, but I can guarantee you they'll pick you up on anything obvious. Drive into that shed with a loud cat-less exhaust and they'll go over it with a fine toothed combed.

I'm sorry I have no good news for you. Hopefully someone in SA can hook you up with stock bits. If I were still there I'd happily help you out. I lived in the NT until very recently. The MVR pits up there were one of the few things I liked about living up there. They'd pass anything on my Skyline.

    yeah.

the cat, i am well aware i need to sort that out.
the pod filter can be bolted easy enough (the crappy apexi brackets have all broken)
the suspension i'm not keen on.
does anyone know of any engineering pathways to avoid it?
frankly, i dont care if it costs me a bit.... i'm NOT dealing with swapping springs all the time. (apart from the fact i have no standard springs)

looks like ill be buying up big.....

how on earth do you guys in SA enjoy your cars?

Don't buy up big. I'm sure someone could lend you some bits for a few days. Stay up in the hills where your car belongs and you should have no problems. Congrats on choosing the best city with the best roads btw.

dude when i went from qld to sa i only had to go to a rego place and change the rego to sa details, didnt have it inspected at all cause i had my rego papers from qld which they were happy enough that i owned the car and that i wasnt trying to register an unregistered vehicle...

so.... because you were simply transferring a car in your own name into SA rego, they were happy enough to just give you rego...

as opposed to bringing a new car into the state that you didnt own?

I bought my SW20 from QLD about 4 years ago and it still had the QLD rego.
Regency Park checked my car and as soon as they lifted the engine lid they knocked it back for a dusty engine.
I had to get a professional cleaner to clean the engine.
The car was absolutely stock including the original wheels.
They did pass it after I cleaned the engine without any dramas.

They are not supposed to do a roadworthy but the inspectors do have the power to defect cars that they deem not to be roadworthy.

Having said all that they are quite reasonable people and will generally advise you if you need anything fixed. They will let you go to get the things fixed and to come back when they are done.

Do whatever they say and you should be OK.

    Cheers

    Adding to my previous post.

They do check the VIN and engine number.
As you probably know checking the engine on a turbo is a nightmare.

Try to help them by moving any hoses wires etc so they can get a good look.

Make sure the car is clean inside and out.

    Good luck

dont take it to recency, you can take it down to sturt police station on a wed, thur or fri afternoon I think for an engine number check, as long as it presents standard then you should not have any problems.

Does anyone actually know anything about the engineering process?

i think i'd rather get the coilovers engineered anyway. just for peace of mind. there is no way i'm going back to stock suspension.... even if it is just to clear a defect!

Would end up costing more than a good set fo springs & shocks
To get a coil over passed yor need to get it adjusted then drilled/tagged so it's locked solid
betteroff with shocks & springs it would be the same but with a better compress ratio

adjustable coilovers are defective in any state...
you can get it rego'ed by a cop shop but need to live x km away from the city
& as for reconsidering the move
you could always see if some of the SA guys have some stock/passable stuff to lend you

    after doing more research....
    http://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transport%2C+travel+and+motoring/Motoring/Vehicles+and+registration/Vehicle+inspections/Vehicle+identity+inspection+-+Tier+2

A vehicle identity inspection (Tier 2) is required if the vehicle:
was last registered interstate, unless you hold a current interstate registration certificate in exactly the same name as the intended South Australian registration - this includes vehicles that may have been registered in South Australia previously

add a CAT, remove the boost gauge, leave it at that :)
    no inspection required.
