I handed money to my mechanic to do it! Until I knew that the airbag wouldn't go off in my face, I wasn't prepared to attempt it myself. I didn't have the right tools anyway.

Do you realise MR-S steering wheels don't have the indents SW20s use to to cancel the indicators?

I don't think there is a fix. Not a sturdy and legal one at least. The indicator-cancelling indentations are cast into the main frame of the wheel.

I'm pretty ignorant about airbags, but if you fit an airbag wheel to a non-airbag car without also fitting the the crash sensor modules, is there any danger of it activating accidentally anyway? Would you have to remove the gas module to be safe?

I don't think there's any way you can remove the airbag or the gas module from the SRS pad in the steering wheel. I saw a Toyota tech brief about 'air bag disposal' somewhere on the net and they use some special device to actually explode the thing (inside a big box) before it can be thrown out. But I don't think there's any danger of it going off anyway. The airbag in my original wheel wasn't connected to anything at all (and that's the way it came from the factory) and neither is my new one.

Gorilla Industries have two of the wheels in stock (Ones an Altezza wheel but still fits).

FYI, TRD wheels are expensive because they are rare. I can almost gurantee that you wont find them under $800US if you do find one.

The answer is yes and no.

I had an airbag in my 4-spoke steering wheel, but none of the sensors or SRS activation relays... so it seems that even non-SRS equipped Bathurst's have an airbag and an SRS logo on the steering wheel, but that doesn't mean your car actually has SRS (which was only an option on Bathurst models up to '98 I think).

The important question is whether you have a steering wheel with a brass ring to pick up the current for the horn, or a 'clockspring' spiral cable unit which feeds power to the horn via a plug-in connector.

Here's a pic of the back of my old wheel with the brass ring so you can see the bit I'm talking about.

If your wheel has got that brass ring, then the swap will take all the bits I mentioned. If you've got the clockspring/connector, it won't have that ring and should be a straight swap.

So, say you are doing this in reverse, I have the clockspring connector but want to use a wheel with a base like the one pictured...

Do you still have the bits you took off to put the clockspring on?

(my clockspring has a 1 inch plug on it too)

I am no expert when it comes to the actual installation

but I have sold a lot of the 98 spec and MRS wheel

The 98 (Rev5) 3 spoke does have the "3 indent" on back of the wheel allowing perfect "automatic signal cancel" feature, where the MR-S does NOT support this feature.

In order for these airbag to work on a SW20 chassis, you will NEED this airbag harness (plug and play), approx. $20 AUS dollar from your local dealer (thanks Surok again for getting me the harness).

IMO, I think the 98 spec (Rev5) looks more appropriate inside the cabin of a SW20, the MRS just does not look right, but to each of his/her own :)

here's my collectiona the moment

here's the details on the harness

here's 98 spec (Rev5) "RED stitch"

lastly, MR-S
