E153 Gearbox Identification
Hi,
Recently got my hands on this MR2 gearbox, advertised as from an MR2 GTS with TRD LSD. Though from my research it appears to look more like a S54 but not entirely sure. Is there a way to tell? I believe it should have the hole on the right side for the starter motor.
Thanks for any help!

The shifter mech is on the wrong side. This is probably from a FWD car, not a MR2

I agree with Admin - it’s probably an E series box from a fwd car but not an MR2 E153. I suspect it’s actually an E58 gearbox from the Corolla Levin GT. The oil line in a U bend on the bottom of the box is a common thing in many of the E series boxes. I‘ve pulled a few MR2 E153’s and Camry Vienta E53’s apart and both have the oil line U bend, but and starters on the other side. As per Admin, shifter is on the opposite side to yours for the MR2 E153. For the Camry Vienta E53, the shifter looks very similar to yours hence us saying it’s for a fwd car. The other thing I notice is that the rear 5th gear rear housing seems to be pressed metal (??). On both the E53 and E153 the 5th gear rear housing is cast alloy.
If it’s the Corolla Levin box it may very well have an lsd. Here’s a link to one for sale that looks like yours
