Toyota to crown GR line-up with 986bhp GR Super Sport

All-new road-going hypercar will arrive in 2022 with a race-bred hybrid set-up. Toyota will top its growing range of GR performance cars with the 986bhp GR Super Sport hypercar, which is due to arrive next year with a plug-in hybrid powertrain developed from the firm’s Le Mans 24 Hours-winning endurance prototypes.

The Mercedes-AMG One and Aston Martin Valkyrie rival will be the flagship model for Toyota’s GR performance car range, which now includes the GR Supra, GR Yaris and new GR 86. It will also serve to firmly link Toyota’s World Endurance Championship programme to its road cars. Company boss Akio Toyoda has put a major emphasis on reinforcing the connection between Toyota’s various motorsport projects and its road-going models. The GR Super Sport uses a road-tuned version of the TS050 Hybrid’s 2.4-litre direct-injection twin-turbo V6, fitted to a ‘Toyota Racing System’ hybrid.

The decision to make the mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive two-seat GR Super Sport was originally approved and announced in 2018, when the planned new Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) regulations for the FIA World Endurance Championship required manufacturers to base racers on road-legal cars.
However, the LMH rules have changed substantially since then to allow bespoke racing cars with all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrains – and that removed the need for Toyota to produce the GR Super Sport for homologation reasons.
Despite that, Toyota has committed to producing the machine as a limited-run halo model and to essentially make it a road-legal version of the racing car – effectively a reversal of the traditional homologation special.

Toyota is doing its best to ensure its new hypercar will end up in the right hands, with a survey interrogating potential buyers.
Prospective buyers for the Toyota GR Super Sport – the Japanese company's first road-going hypercar available to the public – will need to prove they're worthy.
A form posted on the Toyota Japan website has asked potential buyers to list how many high-performance sports cars they currently own, as well as asking them to list their Top 10 favourites.
As well as asking the average mileage driven annually with their sports cars, the form asks which examples the buyer plans to purchase in the future, with space for up to five models.
Toyota clearly has a certain type of owner in mind: those who already have an impressive car collection, with a particular interest given to Toyota enthusiasts.
However, it is unclear how – or if – Toyota will be able to prove the bonafides of the claims.

As the GR Super Sport will be a halo product for the Japanese car maker, the form asks potential buyers whether they have ever owned a Toyota 2000GT or Lexus LFA – considered to be some of the company's most desirable models.
Toyota also gives the opportunity for buyers to list their interest in motorsport, as well as asking whether the person has held an FIA International racing licence.
After they list their 'interests and expectations' in the vehicle, the potential buyers are asked about their intention to purchase the car.
It's an important move by Toyota, as other car makers offering rare and exotic hypercars (such as Ferrari and McLaren) will typically only offer these models to buyers with a history of purchasing the latest and greatest from the company – a more difficult task for Toyota, considering it hasn't had a hypercar like this before.

As with the GR010 race car on which it's based, it's expected the road-going GR Super Sport will offer a version of the 500kW 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, coupled with 200kW electric motors powering the front wheels.

Toyota has filed patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for what appear to be canopy-style doors for the upcoming GR Super Sport hypercar.
First spotted by users on the GR86.org forum, the applications show the windshield, roof, and side glass of a car lifting up as one piece, with a hinge at the front. The driver enters and exits by swinging their legs over the body sides.

Toyota showed a concept version of the GR Super Sport at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon. The concept didn't have any obvious cut lines for conventional doors, but it did have lines running parallel to the side glass that match the patent-application drawings. At the time, Toyota didn't mention a canopy opening.
