SW20 Front Windscreen Replacement

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to  ask if anyone has had any experience having their front windscreen replaced? I think sourcing an OEM one is probably a bit difficult in this day and age (and probably extremely costly).

My local shops (one being O’Brien) and the other is a windscreen repairer, are offering XYG (assume this is the standard for O’Brien) and Fuyao glass. Has anyone used these on their vehicles before?

Alternatively, would love to hear what others have been been able to find in Sydney.

Thanks!
Vic

Have you been given a quote yet?

I picked up from Riverwood a brand new front screen for a AW11 for a very reasonable cost.  I was very surprised.  Looked like a genuine part.

Hi Kojab, I have been quoted up to $600 across a few shops.
Would you mind sending me a pm with the shop name you went to please? I know my current OEM screen has a Toyota sticker on the bottom left, and has a DOT number for Asahi Japan.

    Thanks!

    Vicsticks,
If you book your car into OBriens (or any windscreen repairer) make sure you remove the plastic plenum grille BEFORE you take it in. The repairer will use power tools to remove and reinstate grille and will break the retaining flanges on the grille. You will not realize the grille has been damaged until well after the work has been done and you will have no recourse. O'Brien's rooted my plenum grille and, so far, I have not been able to find an undamaged replacement.
    cheers

    Kojab,
Thanks for your PM - I’ve contacted the company to find out about the manufacturer of the glass.

    TwoDogs,
Thanks - I’ve sent Josh/MR2 Wreckers a message earlier today, awaiting a response for second hand OEM item.

    Groper,
Thanks a lot for the heads up, I have decided to go against O’Brien as other reputable stores around me have quoted less and are also providing Chinese glass (FuYao is the most common now, after also trying a few more stores since yesterday - but apparently they are slightly more preferred to XYG based on some online forum reading too). Will definitely be removing the grille myself prior then, and if i nominate a mobile service - I will definitely be keeping staying with the car and keeping an eye out.

It appears either way, that any aftermarket option will have blue tinting toward the top of the windscreen, based off photographs I’ve seen. My OEM one is clear all the way to the top - but hopefully this just take a bit of getting used to.

Thanks a lot to everyone that has responded though, I will be getting the windscreen replaced hopefully next week, and I’ll keep you updated!
