For the ACT, which generall follows the NSW rules, if you have one of the first SW20s made in December 1989 then it would be eligible for historic rego now. I'm pretty sure this applies now for NSW as well. Or move to Victoria and you get to register it at 25 years.
I have personal experience of the ACT rules, having registered a 29 December 1988 build BMW on historic rego in January last year. The Council of ACT Motor Clubs CRS registrar did query this as my rego paperwork listed the compliance date of March 1989 as the build date. So you can register a car at 29 years and less than a month if you havev the right build date.
