Hyld's MR2 Project Thread

Hi Everyone,
So I've bought this "barn find" MR2. It's a 1992 MR2 SW20 3SGTE. Imported in 1997 by Nippon Car Imports. Its odometer shows 130,000km. The story I got from the previous owner was that he did the 5th gear in the tranny, paid someone to fix it and the ran with his money. So he's had it in his shed for the last few years.

The engine looks complete from what I can tell, I got 2 transmissions with it, the broken one and one which he said he was going to use the components out of.

I am hoping the engine is fine, but won't know til I rip it down and check it out in depth.

I'll keep everyone up to date.

Hyld

Nice, looking forward to seeing the evolution of this one.
Smithfield gearbox and diff can remove, rebuild and install it or I have the guy who has built mine but you need to remove the box and deliver to his residence or to difftechnics.
    Both are very good.

    Quick update guys,

So didnt get much today because it got close to 40 degrees. However I pulled all the parts out of the trunk and bonnet, all of this was just left disconnected. The engine is being held in by one broken mount, the exhaust manifold against the firewall and the cross member. Theres a tonne of parramatta rope holding the engine in place as well as the axles... whoever did this had no idea.

So far I'm going to need to at least get a new intercooler (so if someone can point me in a direction for a good one of those), At least one new mount, maybe 2, a tonne of new bolts and a new fuse box ( because someone decided to smash this one for some reason).

I'm planning on getting the engine out this week on a cooler day and get it into the workshop and start rebuilding that (heres to hoping it isnt fk'd)

Some more pics of the carnage I walked into.

Sorry for not updating in forever guys. Pretty much decided to rebuild the engine from the bottom up and not skip anything, acid dipped the block, new bearings, rings etc.

Unfortunately needed new camshafts :( I got mine on order from Camtech and the guys there seem real awesome.

Thanks so far go to Dylan from Gorilla Industries & some of the guys from MR2 Australia FB page have been helping me out heaps.

Alternator has been refurbished as I could not find one that matched in AUS :(

I've cleaned the exterior a fair bit & it looks a tonne better now.

Great to see a restoration underway !!! Looking forward to seeing the progress.

strange but true, I have an extra new 5th gear synchro if thats your issue (only 5th), I can find and PM the part number if needed, also have spare gearbox seals (toyota) again happy to sell for less than toyota or elsewhere as i ordered too many parts on my gearbox rebuild.

Lots of "upgrades" for reliability and power, many at low cost, enjoy the journey rebuilding and discovering mr2 :)

Thanks Tony, I've got my transmission all sorted though, but I'll keep it in mind just in case. Its good to see it finally moving along.

Wow, so long time no post. I have finally got my 2 running under its own power & plan to register it this week :D. It's been a slow process - but I dont have the mechanical know how to do it myself. So with a lot of annoying and pestering my workshop (I work for a Toyota dealership) we finally got it done :). So heres a list of things I did.

    • Complete rebuild of the engine. New bearings, rings, machined head, complete VRS kit, re-bored etc.
    • Replaced Clutch & Flywheel
    • Replaced Camshafts
    • Rebuilt the alternator
    • New Brakes, Rotors, CV Boots, Steering Rack Boots.
    • Sensors: I had none, speed, temp, o2 etc. for whatever reason the old owner had thrown them or something, luckily not a massive problem but some of them were harder to find then others.
    • Starter Motor: Mine was cactus - sourced one from a guy whose K swapping his MR2 in Sydney :)
    • Alarm: There was some old alarm wired into EVERYTHING!!! Every door, light, interior lights everything. What a nightmare to take out and re wire.
    • Intercooler: The one I had was smashed into pieces. At the moment running a side mounted IC with GReddy style BOV. Hand made the block off plate (Thanks US > AU Exchange Rate). All the piping is quite ugly at the moment but I plan to upgrade it in the future to a 1 piece.
    • Wheels & Tyres: I hated the ugly faded ones that were on it + the tyres were RIP. Ended up using standard CHR rims with 205/45/17 BFG Advantages on the front & 215/45/17 on the rear.
    • Exhaust: My dump pipe was just terrible, holes, bashed. So sourced a Berk one from Gorilla Industries (Again exchange rate killed me). Using the ugly single pipe canon thing. In the plans to upgrade to a nice Berk style one.
    • Put a new Pioneer Apple Carplay compatible unit in. Replaced Gear Knob & Gear Boot.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head right now. My list of things I need to do:

    • New Struts, mine are OK but need to replaced pretty soon
    • New exhaust
    • Respray & Body work
    • Retrim Seats

Overall this community has been great to me. Nothing has been a problem & everyone has given me great advice. I am away in Brisbane when the National meet is on in Canberra (Spewing). But I will be around for the NSW events from now on.

Heres the video of it first moving under its own power :D :D :D https://youtu.be/cOw8slcatjI
