Police destroyed my SW20 without consent

Hi guys, I purchased my SW20 back in 2008'ish and was a member of the forum way back then...  Been off the forum a few years, maybe decade and gosh has it changed.
 
Anyway, to the point...  I need your help please!
 
Long story short:
1. My MR2 was stolen
2. Cops found it, held onto it for forensics etc... They were suppose to return it to me
3. After not being able to contact me???  (I never received a call from them), they destroyed it.
 
I have lodged a formal complaint to the AFP and they basically said, tough luck they followed process and legislation and they didn't do anything wrong.
 
My next step is to follow this up with Ombudsman, and I've tried contacting legal who advised it'll cost $295 just to have someone look at the case and tell me what my options are.
 
Do I just write it off or is there anything I can do?

    You say the AFP destroyed it, so I take it this occurred in the ACT.
    You can complain about actions of the AFP to the Commonwealth Ombudsman. The Ombudsman takes complaints from those who think they have been treated unfairly by a Commonwealth Government agency, which the AFP is.
    Having a complaint investigated by the Ombudsman costs you nothing, other than your time.
    Probably best to use the online complaint form. See: http://www.ombudsman.gov.au/
    Suggest you clearly explain, in plain, non-legal, language what happened, and why you think the APF's actions were wrong. Also, the outcome you are seeking. 
    While you can ask for compensation, the Ombudsman cannot award you compensation directly, but he can make recommendations to the AFP.
    The Ombudsman's Office will not provide you with legal advice, but it is a free, independent complaint investigation service.

    Nothing to lose by trying for $295 (if you have $295 spare).
    What you will require is detailed evidence; dates, police officer names, locations, especially the information the police are giving now - who tried contacting you, when, what was their follow up action and when did that occur, what actions you took, what the response is now and by who. Detailed documented information not just a sad storey.
    That being said, a decade later you are chasing what’s happened to your car when they took it in for finger printing that takes a few days at most, not sure if your time has lapsed as within even major legal issues you only have a certain amount of years to claim.

    Sorry I should have been more clear, it was stolen last year in September.
     
    Destroyed in January, and I was informed about it in March.
     
    Now I'm chasing up what can be done.
