You say the AFP destroyed it, so I take it this occurred in the ACT.
You can complain about actions of the AFP to the Commonwealth Ombudsman. The Ombudsman takes complaints from those who think they have been treated unfairly by a Commonwealth Government agency, which the AFP is.
Having a complaint investigated by the Ombudsman costs you nothing, other than your time.
Probably best to use the online complaint form. See:
http://www.ombudsman.gov.au/Suggest you clearly explain, in plain, non-legal, language what happened, and why you think the APF's actions were wrong. Also, the outcome you are seeking.
While you can ask for compensation, the Ombudsman cannot award you compensation directly, but he can make recommendations to the AFP.
The Ombudsman's Office will not provide you with legal advice, but it is a free, independent complaint investigation service.
