It's your ignitor module or ignition coil.

Possibly faulty ECU capacitors also. Read through the thread below.

http://www.mr2oc.com/6-mkii-90-99-na-turbo/559625-ecu-capacitor-replacement-how-guide.html

I have a spare ecu here that was doing weird things a year or two ago and just swapped it out for a different one. Opened it up last night and found two blown caps. I am goign to do a repair so I have a spare ECU again.

I will put money on it. It's the ECU. Cap will work for a while until ECU is heated up, then they fail.
This is a link which will show you I went through the exercise with my Mr2.

Prelim results are in:

- I could hear the fuel pump when jumping FP and B+ in the diagnostic port
- There was 11v at the grey ashtray fuel pump coupling when cranking

So i guess this rules out a fuel issue? It was stalling at around 1,500 rpm so the pump wasn't under load at the time, and everything seams to be powering properly.

I also checked the cold start sensor. BGB provides two tests.
1. Resistance of 70 - 90 ohm between the two terminals. Mine scored 77ish
2. Resistance of 30 - 90 ohm between STA(?) and ground. One of the terminals to ground was 147, and the other was 75. I'm not sure which is which so this could either be a pass or fail. I'll get a second opinion on this one.

I haven't checked the ECU yet but I'll take a look this weekend. At this stage I'm thinking it's ignitor, distributor, or ecu.

thanks for the help so far

Ok so I pulled the ECU and it's the cleanest looking thing on the car.
A previous owner has tapped into what looks like main power and ground. It's done properly with inline fuses and not currently connected so no big deal.

The capacitors in the ECU don't have any signs of failure.

I think at this stage I'll rule out an ECU issue. I'm betting it will be the ignitor or something spark related.

Sometimes they'll look ok.

I had an ecu with 2 leaky caps (the rest looked good) that I replaced but the condition persisted until I replaced all the caps. It's cheap and easy to do, might aswell.

I don't disagree but none of mine appear to be leaking, and there's a chance I'll make matters worse with a crap fix.
I'll come back to this once I've checked ignition and timing.

Results are in...and Falcon is the winner. Dead fuel pump and clogged filter. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Enjoy pulling the tank out, if you've got some nice friends to helps a lot it have someone help hold the pipe out of he way.

I don't have the space to manage big jobs like this. I do have a solid mechanic though. Work underway.

Out of curiosity, what is he charging you to do it? If you don't mind me asking.

Not sure yet. I'll PM when I get the bill. He's doing a few other jobs for me so probably a couple hrs labor and time to diagnose. He knows MR2s well and does good work. Rev Doctor in Asquith

Cool, I remember when I bought my MR2 I had a heater hose leaking. Took it to a local "performance mechanic" who was highly recommended to me. He charged me $800 for time spent taking out the fuel tank and couldnt even fix it.

Now that I've done it myself I have no clue why he pulled the tank out in the first place and even then $800 in madness. And this was close to 10 years ago so he would probably charge more now! Needless to say I've never been back haha.

But yeah, if he knows his MR2s you'll be fine I reckon. Having a hoist would make it a LOT easier too.
