SW20 Battery

 Hi All,
I need to replace the battery in my 1990 SW20. At first I had trouble finding the code number for the battery, but Repco looked it up and said NS60 something and "we have 5 - $179". When he showed one to me, it looks too small for the tray it sits in.
He suggested that in the 27years of battery development perhaps the battery has smaller dimensions.
To me, so long as it has enough grunt, CCAs, then dims are the most important specification. Alright voltage.
The current battery in the car is the wrong one, too tall and the brackets that hold it in place are not there, so I stuffed rags
around it as it also does not fit the tray.
a) should the battery fit "snuggly" in the tray, or does it rely on the clamps to stop movement ?
b) does anyone know the correct dimensions ?  I am thinking of getting a deeper battery with extra CCAs so long as it fits.
c) recommendations ?
thanks

I have no input other than mine definitely isn't a snug fit. Its a fair amount smaller than the tray.

I'd think you'd you would definitely want to have the holding bracket fitted for registration checks and safety etc.

Thanks Guys, I do have the brackets but they don't fit the current battery, and now I realise that they are really what determines the dims, not the tray. So all good, I'll drive to Repco and fit the new battery with the brackets, so will know one way or the other, if I need to change.

Remember it's only a two litre engine. You don't need a truck battery.

Yes, exactly what Mr Repco pointed out.
And a low compression one at that.

It's fine, I run that batt. It's actually pretty good cca for the size. 7.5yrs out of my last one (century).

I just changed mine to an Exide Extreme X55D23CMF which is really good. No maintenance, good capacity and CCA. Its bigger than what's recommended (NS60 which i believe should be for the AW11) but fits nicely into the SW20 battery tray with stock battery clamp.

Last Battery was Century Yuasa which i would avoid like the plague. Failed on me within a year and warranty wasn't honored as they stated it was normal wear and tear. Really poor

I also run the Century NS 60, and it works fine.
Whatever you fit make sure you keep it charged up if you want it to last.

Scandal !!!  I decided that before I buy a battery, maybe I should check it, and the charging system, and my knowledge of alternators and regulators. Following instructions found on the interweb, we measured the voltage
at the battery, disconnected, connected, lights on, then with starter motor load, then idling, then at 2500rpm, then
added lights, indicators, radio. The results ? Well when the engine is not running, the voltage drops such that I need a new battery. (No scandal there), when the engine is running my multimeter says with load or not ...around 14.8v.
All the interweb hits say your suppy needs to be regulated between 13.5 - 14.5v and outside that range means NEW regulator (if too high) or possible heat/damage to electrical components, or NEW alternator (if too low). Fine, I'll get a new regulator. I open up the BGB to find out where the regulator is (on the alternator) but SCANDAL !! ...it says Normal is u[p to 15.1v !!!! every generic doc I had read was saying that over 14.7,say, would shorten the battery's life.
So I searched and there are some hits for SW20, 15.1v and BGB.... but none when I add "mistake".
Has anyone noticed this before ?  My multimeter may be out, but the documentation is generic for all cars!
     and more importantly, batteries.

The failing battery may be the reason for the higher voltage you are seeing at the terminals? Do you have a spare battery you can temporarily hook up to test this?

    Hi Skylighter,
all my readings may be out because the battery needs replacing, or my multimeter is cheap, but how can Toyota suggest 15.1v is normal when (it seems) everyone else is saying 14.5 should be the max into whatever battery (and components around the car)?

Does the bgb suggest 15.1 at the alt or batt?

I don't know man. Toyota would have a good idea as they designed the car. I've never seen 15.1v in any of my cars though.

Sounds like you need a new battery anyway so maybe go ahead and replace it with the correct one and see what the Alt is putting out afterwards? If it's still too high investigate further.

Maybe test your voltmeter on something with a known DC voltage like a newish 9v battery or friends car battery?
