White 1998 MR2 with Beams engine for sale
This beautiful 1998 white MR2 with Beams engine has only 129K Km after 19 years. Available on Car from Japan, US$13,641 landed Melbourne, Adelaide or Port Kembla: Brisbane US$13,632 26 great photos. This car looks like it has been very well looked after, has that just left the factory appearance. If you are after a next to new SW20 & missed out buying one back when you could buy one from you local Toyota dealer then this is the MR2 for you. As an extra the Beams engine was never offered in Australia, I am just thinking what it would have cost here in 1998. About three times the asking price now. https://carfromjapan.com/...596b2a-toyota-mr2-1998

Fantastic buy... but unfortunately, it wouldn't be eligible for compliance/registration in Australia (unless brought here by an Australian citizen who bought it and kept it in Japan for 2 years before returning home), which is a massive shame.

Are you sure? That particular model was never sold here, I believe that makes it eligible for import.

It's not listed on the SEVS register and to my the best of my knowledge that means it's not possible to have the vehicle registered or complied for road use anywhere in the country*. The only loophole would be if it arrived as a personal import by an Australian who has lived in Japan and owned the car there for two years before importing it. http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/sevs/sevsindex.htm (*Anyone who thinks otherwise is welcome to come to their own conclusion )

Nah, otherwise we'd be able to import Turbo MR2's, Altezzas etc etc.

As far as I know these current import laws were created to protect the domestic vehicle production market, so why do we still have them? Also, one of my friends just imported a 1989 Mazda RX7 Turbo (which is also not in the list).

^ pretty sure the import laws will change, no idea when though. There will be heaps of debate from the used car market though - you can imagine used car values will drop massively. Its not too hard to import cars into NZ - no idea what their used car values are like though.

Your friends 1989 car would be eligible as it is greater than 25 years old.

It can not be imported unless it was owned over sea for two years. It was the year 1992 that was last option to import JDM mr2 into Aust. That why you don't see gen 3 JDM models, unless it was a private import or a track car.

Such a shame. There's dozens of clean, low-mileage Rev5 BEAMS SW20s in Japan looking for new homes...
