CAN Bus Thermocouple Interfaces to use for EGT's?

I'm looking to run thermocouples in each runner to monitor EGT's for each cylinder as well as each scroll of the turbo and that means I need an 8 channel interface as they only seem to come in 4 or 8!

To you guys that have done something similar before can you recommend a quality product I should check out? I'm also looking for good open tip sensors to use that aren't to expensive as the price really adds up quickly when you buy 6.

Apart from the obvious tuning advantages given by knowing whats going on at each exhaust port, I'm setting this up so I can use the data to protect the engine if something goes wrong by shutting down cylinders, limiting boost, changing timing etc and hopefully preventing a catastrophic failure.

So the only two types of can based ones i have used are the haltech unit, and a racebrade TC-8. Both will take a direct connection for a standard k type thermocouple.

Other than that, i have only used motec E888 or E816 units, but they require wiring work to integrate.

The problems i can forsee are A. The units aren't cheap, and B. The CAN units are not cheap, and C. Thermocouples are a bit on the sensitive/unreliable side to put too many trims on. In all honesty it is quite a costly exercise. Also you need all 4 sensors to be the same distance and path from the exhaust ports to read accurately enough to be relevant. You can have 50 degree temp differences from the same mixtures etc, just by having on in a straight section of runner and one in a bend, even when the same distance from the exhaust valves.

You are usually at the serious end of the spectrum when you get to egts, as there are many sensors etc that typically come before these for data and engine protection.

Also another consideration is the engine management you are using, as this will affect the ability of integration of the unit. The haltech unit is really only designed for use with haltech ecus via a can hub, although they can be used with some other ecus. Racegrade works exceptionally well with motecs, and can be used with some other hardware.

Awesome thanks for the advice, I have come across the TC-8 so its good to see someone who's used it endorse it. Another option I'd found was one done by diyautotune which seemed a little more 'barebones'.

I'm using an Emtron KV8 for the engine management which is highly compatible with Motec so the TC-8 should integrate nicely. As you say the EGT's are just a part of what will be actively monitored by the ECU, among other things I'll also be monitoring the turbo's rpm and this along with the EGT's  pre turbine should prevent pushing the turbo past its limit.

In the pic below you can see that the top mount mani will make it pretty easy to mount the egt's close to the exhaust ports and at equal distances. The last two sensors will be in the merge just before each 'scroll' enters the turbine housing.

I considered tapping the turbine housing directly but since we were modifying the manifold already it made more sense to do it all at once.

I also believe widemr has a racegrade tc8, i know he has some of their other products in his car.

Are you going to put one in the dump pipe for reference sake? You can get an idea on backpressure in the exhaust, based on the temps pre turbo relative to post turbo.
