Engine squeak when clutch pedal is pressed

Hi all,

I used the 'search forums' to see if this has been asked/solved before but my search came up no good. My apologies if this has been asked before.

I drive a 1992 Turbo SW20. Today when I went to use my clutch there was a noticeable squeak coming from engine bay. It only occurs when the clutch is being pressed down (not on the way back up) and it's only happens during the last ~40% of the depression.

This has happened once before from memory but it went away after a few days. My brother and I spent some time this afternoon trying to get to where the noise is but I haven't jacked the car up yet. I'm going to raise it later this week and have a look around so if anyone knew what the problem likely is and could point me in the right direction I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks,
- B.

It sounds to me like the release bearing is a little bit worn out if im understanding you description properly. When the bearing assembly in a release bearing is a bit worn out, as it contacts the diaphragm fingers of the clutch cover to disengage the clutch it has to spin up quite quickly. If it is worn out, it can make an audiable noise. Sometimes it will continue as long as you hold the clutch pedal down as it has to continue spinning, which indicates it quite worn/unserviceable.

Monitor it over the next few days, to see if it goes away or gets worse. Worst case scenario, they sieze, amd continued use will make some really awful noise, and wear out the diaphragm on the clutch cover, and the clutch will cease to disengage.

Not sure if the same squeal I have, but...It's probably the clutch slave cylinder push rod (when pushing against the clutch fork) or the clutch fork pivot (inside gearbox bell housing) that needs lubing up or both.

Cant really hear it while engine is on, but when engine off its squeals when you step on the clutch. I've had that noise ever since I got my car.

Been meaning to lubricate those points but never gotten to it.

Temporary fix, well it fixes, there is a black rubber (square) grommet in the front side (cabin side) of the gearbox. Move the rubber grommet to the side, and squirt in some lubricant spray (machinery lubricant, motorcycle chain lubricant or any heat style spray lubricant). Have a friend slowly press the clutch in and out whilst spraying. Watch your fingers for any moving parts. Put black grommet back in place. Grease the slave cylinder shaft, whilst your friend slowly pushes the clutch in and out.
Continue to press he clutch in and out, and 98% of squeaks will be gone :).
Worked for me and is listed on mr2oc as success for others.
This is not the mechanical fix of removing the gearbox and replacing the worn parts, but it works and you will get more time with no noise.

It's usually the clutch fork contact points going dry over time, unfortunately it's within the gearbox housing so to  lubricate the parts, the gearbox needs to be dropped.  Spraying lubricant down the rubber boot should work in the short term, until you need to do some gearbox/clutch work, then you can take it out and get some proper grease onto it.
