Rebuilding an engine is very broad, too broad. Choice of parts, types of work done, done yourself or by a professional.... leads to a bill of $2000- $20,000.... Buy another motor and drop it in, mystery how long it will run for. Rebuild and get tempted to do a few upgrades, and then a few more, then you have dropped your saving stalled project waiting for your next pay cday (lol) I am less than half way through a rebuild on a 3sgte, total block / head rebuild is budgeted at $10k+. (full rebuild, gaskets, forged internals, head work, valve springs, cams, etc).

Hi Tony, totally Agree, bt I dont want to go through the process of getting an engineering cert. Therefore want to rebuild my current N/A 3SGE. Last resource then I have to source out a 3SGTE. I saw a BEAMS on a celica for sale @ $4500 with enkei rims might consider that too, bt like you mentioned before mystery lol

I'm halfway through mine too. Still need to organise turbo and such.
Pistons, Rods, 272's, springs and retainers, 1mm oversized valves, brand new gaskets, collets, seals, valve stem seals ect.
It's around 5.5k in parts, top end From America so also paying postage on top.
Anyway back to the original post. Why are you wanting to rebuild it?

How much money you can afford to spend? If you intend keeping the car, the cheapest option may be to rebuild your current motor. Then you'ill know for sure what you've got. A 3sgte, or beams etc, would cost many thousands more by the time you get it fitted and working properly, keeping in mind that any used motor is always going to be a gamble.

Multiple things are different like brackets, wiring ect. but with what you have now you should be able to make it work and buy a couple of things.

My N/A motors on 312, no big leaks or anything but has a slight knocking noise in the motor, needs shims adjusted.
But for me I bought it cheap so I could turn it into a project a year and a half ago. Wow time goes fast. Will you be pulling the motor yourself? If yes then rebuild is cheaper. If no the might as well go that beams.

I've done two MR2 BEAMS swaps and I wouldn't recommend you buy that Celica and try to swap the engine into your SW20 unless you're ready to spend some proper money on it. Aside from the fact that you can't tell anything about its condition, there are also a number of other things you'll need to do to get it running properly in an SW20 – like tracking down an original BEAMS MR2 OEM airbox and intake piping, having parts of the exhaust refabricated, and more. Finding some of those parts isn't easy (or cheap). In fact, the airboxes are almost impossible to find, and the engines don't idle properly with pod filters. Unless you're really good at wiring, you'll also have to spend several hundred dollars getting someone else to sort that for you. The BEAMS engine loom in the Celica isn't going to work in your MR2, and the loom on your ADM GT isn't suitable for the BEAMS engine either, unless it undergoes major surgery. Much as I love BEAMS engines, if you don't want a bad case of OMG! 'bill shock' , I'd recommend you rebuild your own motor. At least then you'll know what you're getting into – and getting at the end. If you really want to go BEAMS, save some more $$$ first or it could all become a much bigger headache than you're ready for! The fact of life is, doing an engine swap properly isn't a cheap option.

I'd suggest find a written off car at auction with reasonable k's on it and swapping the engine over - thats if budget is the main factor. A lot of the time the cars are still drivable so you can test the engine fully before you pull it out (but not before purchase at auction) Could find an engine being sold thats still in a car being sold privately with the right timing if you're lucky enough. Can't imagine they'd be worth a fortune. The 3sge is normally a really reliable motor unless it has been badly abused. No need for engineers certs, its a like for like swap. Would need the engine no's changed though through your state car registry.

I not long ago rebuilt my 3sge engine completely, did it for MTC 2016 just gone, so you have an idea, I rebuilt it with all genuine toyota parts (where ever I could). Here was my parts list if it helps: Full gasket set, Oil pump Water pump Main bearings Con rod bearings & bushes Pistons & rings Timing belt kit Clutch kit Head bolts Machined parts: Block faced Cylinder head - pressure tested & faced, valves lapped in & assembled Block honed Flywheel faced This all came up to around the $2500 mark.
