Newbie need help saving his Spyder...

Hi Everyone,

New to this forum,
I own a 2005 MR2 Spyder (SMT)
I have join cause i require some help... !!!

My SMT Spyder clutch was slipping, and due to be changed, however no mechanics was willing to go near the SMT unit...
So i took upon myself to change the clutch, i have got everything changed and installed, the engines starts and runs fine, however I can not put the car in gear.

When i put the car in gear, there would be a loud "clunk", but nothing happens, the Neutral light will blank and car will continue to sould a warning sound...

I think this is beyond my skills..
I am looking for a mechanics that is specialized in the MR2 Spyder with SMT?

Mr.T is very unhelpful, they do not have enough dealing with the MR2 SMT...
Is there anyone in NSW that knows the SMT Spyders??

Thanks
Ronald

I believe there is a process you must complete after changing the clutch.
One of the SMT guru's on here will be able to help you out :)

    The relearn procedure???

    1. Warm up , until coolant temp guage is horizontal
    2. On a straight stretch of road, put  into 1st and start moving
    3. At an appropriate point, shift directly from 1st into 3rd
    4. On 3rd, rev  to over 3000rpm, then lift off throttle. Let car coast and rpm drop (without applying breaks) to below 3000rpm and downshift into
2nd. Again, let car coast in 2nd until rpm below 2000rpm.
    5. Apply break and stop car.
Repeat steps 1 through 5 three times.

How do i perform this when i can't get the car in gear??

OK, a couple of questions for you:

    1) Was the clutch you used a stock Toyota one, or any kind of aftermarket kit?
    2) Was the flywheel machined?
    3) Is the ECU throwing any trouble codes at all?

It sounds like your issue is either the clutch not being able to disengage fully (possible issue with aftermarket clutches being a fraction of a mm too thick/flywheel incorrectly surfaced), in order for it to pick a gear, or you have something wrong with the GSA itself.

It's also worth noting that after reinstalling everything, rotating the wheels a few turns by hand will help line everything up for the electronics to do their work (its part of the 'Parts Exchange' process to do this)

I don't want to go all techo right now, but if you can answer those three questions, it'll help :)

    1) Was the clutch you used a stock Toyota one, or any kind of aftermarket kit?
    • No, i replaced it with a Exedy Sport Tuff Heavy Duty Clutch
    2) Was the flywheel machined?
    • No, the flywheel did not looked like it require machining
    3) Is the ECU throwing any trouble codes at all?
    •  I do not have a Diagnostic reader, will a normal OBDII reader work?
It's also worth noting that after reinstalling everything, rotating the wheels a few turns by hand will help line everything up for the electronics to do their work (its part of the 'Parts Exchange' process to do this)
    • I will give this a go, i will require to jack the car up for this, do i keep it jacked, and put it in gear on the stand?
Is there any procedures to relearn the ECU?
I know the relearn procedure works for the friction point... not sure if it will work if it is out too much?

    Thanks Ess

The general rule of thumb is that the 'Parts Exchange' process needs to be carried out, using Toyotas TIS (Techstream) software and a compatible OBD2 reader.

Without this, you can run into a number of issues including clutch stroke not being measured accurately, the shift position/stroke sensors not being calibrated correctly, etc.

The first thing I would do if I were you, would be to get ahold of an OBD2 reader and TIS software and carry out the Parts Exchange process.  I assume you're in/near Sydney?  If so, I think aussiespyder might have the aforementioned bits to do that for you (im in SA, you see, haha)

If that doesn't work, then it could be a case of pulling the box off again and going over every possible issue - starting with the flywheel thickness.

EDIT:  Friction point relearn will be irrelevant until the above process is finished.
