1992 MR2 timing belt different part number. urgent!

Hi all, I have a 1992 3sgte gen 2. I know cos it has ct26 turbo. The mechanic is changing the belt now but the existing belt has only 177 teeth which the correc OEM belt for the gen 2 I 188! I checked the existin par number on th o belt and its f gen 3. Anyone know if it's OK to put 188?

    From memory there is about 2-3 teeth different between gen 2 & 3 belts. I would make sure the correct one gets put back on.

    I confirmed the new one is correc for the gen2 188

    If I recall it's 178 for Gen2 and 177 for Gen3. The change was to accommodate a smaller oil pump pulley on the Gen3.

    People have ran the Gen2 belt on Gen3 without any issues, although it's not ideal.

    If you can even get the Gen3 belt on, I'd say it will be too tight.

    Well put the 188 belt on. Hopefully it'l be ok
