Rev tach not working

Hi all,

I cannot get my rev tach working... I bought the car like this... It moves but only like 500rpm... I've had the cluster fixed but don't think he did  anything... He tested it and showed me the rev tach is working on his test bench... I even replaced the entire cluster with a used cluster and it's still not working... So I know it's not the capacitor, what else could it be? Can anyone help please?

Can anyone confirm, if my rev tach is not working can I use an aftermarket rev tach? Would this work around work?

MR2 tachos are generally easy to diagnose and fix. Where are you located?

When you say it moves only 500 rpm, is that it jumps 500 rpm at a time or it only shows a maximum of 500 rpm even when accelerating or it shows 500 rpm when the car is turned off?
If you have tested the cluster, then the fault will be with the wiring or the igniter signal.
Do you run an aftermarket ECU or non standard ignition system (non standard are other than a distributor and spark plug leads)?

It slowly climbs to 500rpm even though it should be reading like 4000rpm... When shut off it sits at 0... stock ecu... i don't thinks non standard ignition system... but I can't confirm... the distributor is leaking oil.. I've order replacement distributor, cap rotor and leads..
