Fuel gauge always on?

Is this normal, just seems a bit odd

    Putting fuel in the car, will help stop the light from coming on. :)

    The fuel gauges in Toyotas (those from 80's and 90's including MR2's, Celicas, Camrys etc) used to show the contents of the fuel tank even if the ignition was turned off. Later model Toyotas don't have this feature.
