Alternator issue - AGAIN :( :( :(

She went so well down to Wakefield & back even when she was out in the rain all night Saturday & Sunday  Then for the club run on Saturday was all good.
Now she has been outside at work all day & it has rained most of the day.
Started up after work & these lights stayed on as well at the amps only being just above half way.  Drove the 5km home all ok, wipers going at normal speed.  Didn't turn the lights on tho just in case.
Alternator was replaced in November 2013, so 2 months out of warranty.

Not going anywhere tonight, so she will be sitting in the garage.

Shaz, check your battery acid levels, maybe a little low.
When I was working on it at MTC, I did forget to mention to you that your battery is in need of replacement, may only be that.

Ok.  Thanks.  How do I check the levels?
Battery was new in September 2012.
I got a bit concerned because they are the same 2 lights that came on when the alternator failed.

Remove spare wheel, I think from memory your battery was a maintenance free type.  If that's the case, you will need to take it somewhere & have them load test it.

Maintenance free (normally calcium type) will have a little viewing glass / window - about the size of a 5c piece.
Use a torch & see what colour it is looking down into it.  If its green = good, clear = replace, black = recharge. (From memory that the colour references).

Those battery indicators are very inaccurate. If you have a multi-meter it will be easy to see if its your alternator or battery that is at fault. If you run a multi-meter across the positive and negative on the battery while the car is off and the volatage is below 12v then your battery is gone, if its above 12v and you start your car and it doesn't go up then your alternator, wiring, voltage regulator etc...might be at fault. Your probably best to take it to the mechanic that changed your alternator to check, should be under warranty and hopefully they can check it on the spot and tell you.

Wouldn't know what a multi-meter looked like, lol.
I'm fairly sure there was only 12 month warranty on the alternator.  This is the 2nd one they put in.  The first one failed after 3 months.   Wasn't my regular mechanic either,.......... long story.......... but I was hoping to not have to deal with him again.
Thinking that if she gets me the 5km to work, I might call our Auto electrician that we use for work.  They come to us for simple things.

Got the NRMA to come & check.
Battery is all good.  Alternator belt looks all good.
The guys who did the alternator aren't happy about getting involved again.  Apparently the place he got the alternators from gave him pittance last time it failed.  Not my problem.  He is also concerned that if he replaces it again, the same thing might happen again in 14 months, where it will be out of warranty because it is 2 years from original work.  I suggested different brand maybe?.......................
She is still running, but I don't the drive to & from work is only 5k & I don't want to risk taking her any further.
    Help.

When she was sitting in the rain at Wakefield it was flat.  Sitting in the rain here at work is on a very slight sideways downhill.  Could that make water run where is shouldn't?

Anyone got a good alternator?  Build date August 1990 N/A.  Part No according to TOYDIY when I put in my VIN No.
    27020 ALTERNATOR ASSY 27060-7425012V 80A1

Could it have anything to do with the wiring in the door?  Sometimes the windows won't work, so I open & close the door and it then works.  Plus when the door is open, sometimes it sounds like it is locking & unlocking all by itself, but nothing is happening.  I guess I should get an Auto Electrician to have a look at that too.
Don't know if I can do this again.

Maybe you need to consider going with a genuine or bosch alternator? both are of good quality.

The NA rain guards do tend to drip water on the alternator, some people fabricate up a piece of sheet metal and bolt it over the alternator to stop the water dripping on it directly

Not sure what brand it currently is.  Have to wait to see if he will replace under warranty.
Yeah could look at getting someone to do something like that.
Or I could sell her & buy a sensible car. :(

I have a alternator of you need one. No cost, genuine was working fine in my car which did very little km's.

Wonder if he'd just give me some cash to go away....................... could I even suggest that to him?  Don't think I'd be brave enough.
Then I'd go to an Auto Electrician, get them to fix it & also the other little annoying electrical issues.

Would it fit my 1990 NA?

If he did give me cash to go away.  Any idea's on what it would cost roughly for someone to replace it for me????
How long should it take them?
The Auto Elec I'm thinking of does lots of work on our utes & I'm fairly sure he has a hoist.
He also had a couple of interesting sports cars there last time I was there.  Looking at his website he's worked on at least 1 Ferrari, plus lots of project cars, so I think I could trust him to take care of her.
