Tyre recommendation for 15" wheels

Hi Guys,
I'm already thinking about next years MTC lol.
I want to stay in the street class (unmodified) and i need better tyres, which means i've gotta stay with oem sizes.
Can anyone recommend better tyres than the Falken Ziex's that i currently have?
They weren't real great on the track, but my local dealer doesn't know of much else in the 15" 195 & 225 sizes.

Thanks
Rick

I looked at them, but they don't do anything wider than a 205 in 15" 50 series tyre?

    Hi Rick,
My car had Toyo Proxes on when I got it. I replaced a set of rears & then more recently went to a set of no names.
I thought that the Toyos were good but I reckon that the fronts made the steering heavy.

At a quick look at Toyo web site, I am not sure that Proxes are still available in 15 inch.

    Hi Again,
Just had a look again at Toyo web site. They do still show the Proxes T1R in 225/50 x 15 & 195/55 x 15.

    Hi Rick,
I didn't do any track with the Toyos, but I reckon that others on the forum have.
Not that I have much track experience, but I was surprised recently that my current cheap NEXENs didn't perform as badly as I expected at Barbagallo Waneroo.

Staying true to the street class I would recommend these if they come in your sizes:
    Advan AD08, AD08R
    Hankook RS-3
    Bridgestone RE-11
    Toyo R1R
    Dunlop Direzzas
    Nitto NT05
Kumho KU36s although the Federal RSRs have taken over those for the "it" tyre being cheaper and faster

Also double check the treadwear rating to make sure it's still within your class...

most of these wont survive very long on track. most of them are really classed as "ultra high perforamce" road tyres. the federal 595 is perfect exapmle of this, great on road for about 15,000km but last about 15 mins on a track with a decent driver.
many of the "proper" race semi slicks are also DOT approved so they are classed as production tyres and acceptable on the street (but wont last long). CAMS has a list of these

I have Toyo T1R's on mine, they were good on the hill climb (apart from my fronts which are away older than the rears - probably 'too' old) But on the circuit they were fine until they went off, then I did too. My fault, I felt the change and was too cocky coming out onto the 2nd last straight.
I guess they may be alright if you gave them a cool down couple of laps now and then but pushing each and every corner made them greasy.

They may be DOT approved but i'd bet that most of the po po would defect you for them. You could wave any USA standard under their noses but it wouldn't get you far.
If you wanted to do that i'd suggest having Australian standards paperwork showing the numpty cop that they are legal for the street.

Most semi slicks (a050, r888, v70a etc) are street legal. Some like the Hoosiers that Glenn was running aren't because they're basically a slick with 2 grooves in it, even though they are dot approved and street legal in america. But you're not interested in semi slicks anyway so never mind.

Any of the tyres Tree mentioned are exactly what you're after. Best performance before stepping into semi slicks and they'll keep you in the unmodified class. They're grippier and hold up to track abuse much better than regular street tyres. Toyo t1r are just regular high performance tyres and are much less suited to track work than the tyres on Tree's list.

Toyo T1R's are a great street tyre, I've been using them on MR2's for years. Can't comment on their track performance, but you'll get much less life if you go for a semi-slick.
Unfortunately the appropriate sizes seem to have disappeared from the Toyo AU website. (!!)
My last set were ordered from the UK (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk), arrived to-the-door within 5 working days, at no more than cost price in Australia, including shipping!
    Go 205/55 and 225/50.

Unfortunately they don't do RSR's in stock sizes, Toyo R1R's might be the best bet i think...

I remember calling up about the Toyo T1R's. Although they are not listed on the web, call up your local tyre dealership, they can still probably get them in.

I only ran them on the rear's and found at high speed they felt horridly floating, even with rock hard suspension. They clearly have a soft sidewall - All of this has been discussed previously on the forum.

I gave up on tyre selection and bought some second hand forged lightweight 17' jap rims to get a better tyre selection. Wheels weigh about the same as the 15' rims and I can get a wider tyre on. Win-Win!
