(Eddie’s New Found Love) -SW20-

Hi all,

After being hassled, it’s about time I started a thread on my JDM 3SGTE MR2 SW20 Rebuild.
I have always wanted to build a project car, but never had the tools, space or money. But now that I had started growing my business, I have built my man cave/ work shed. Therefore realised it was time to start the dream of owning my own sports car as every man should own a sports car once in their lifetime.

As a kid I have always dreamed of owning a Lamborghini Murciélago. But that was never going to happen in my lifetime. Which was then a kick start to the thought process of a project, (building a replica). After research, found an MR2 was the best candidate for the build. So therefore ‘jumped the gun’ and purchased an MR2, not knowing the full extent of the project.

After talking to engineers about complying too Australian standards. This was going to be a timely/ costly exercise. After much thought and homework, I came to a conclusion that I shouldn't destroy a perfectly good car. My next thoughts were whether I should sell or keep the MR2 for my project car. The decision was easy once I found out what the car was capable of!!

The car had heating issues. There was nothing worse than me pulling the car over with it ‘boiling like a kettle’. The look on the bystander’s faces didn't look like they were ready to pull out a teabag but looked overly shocked as if the car was going to blow up!! Asthe car had clocked up over 150,000 km’s and a having few other issues I thought it was time for an engine rebuild. The next big decision for me was do I leave it stock or work it “off its head”. Decided to keep it stock for the reliability and fuel economy.
Too much money and 8 months had passed, after the car had been with the mechanic. Finally…. I got the car back, the engine had been rebuilt, with an upgraded turbo, water pump, clutch, ECU etc… The car ran like a DREAM.

 The body was next.......
After many hours on you tube, forums and searching for images of body kits, colours etc.... I Nearly ended up divorced for spending more time on my car body then my wife's:) and spending over budget again on buying things from front lips, side skirts to little things like targa top bags didnt help the situation either!! Now it was time to disassemble and prep ready for paint.

Whoever has had to decide on a colour before must know what i was up against. Even though i knew it had to be a red as the existing car was and didnt want to pull the whole car apart which i ended up doing anyway. It was a mission to choose from 1000's of shades of red, which i knew it will would make or break the overall finish of the build!! I eventually decided to go with a Japanese red being a JDM and all. It was another waiting game to get someone to spray it which didn't happen over night but did happen!! And the end RESULT i couldn't have been happier with!!

Looks like a great rebuild Eddie. Did you doing the respray yourself?

Also, would you recommend Peter's Head Shed? Are their prices for a head rebuild reasonable?

I think Eddie has some secret paint that repels dirt... I never saw a blemish on his car over the 2 days!

I'm glad you decided not to go with a replica kit... they just add weight and never look quite right.
It looks fantastic now and is a real credit to you.
Nice workshop btw. I love the tv on the wall. I'm guessing that you're a plumber by the racks full of PVC pipes?
