Blown CV joint. is my Diff ok?

Hi guys,

Blew my left rear CV joint to pieces the other day. finally got it up on the lift and here it is.

So we have pulled the cv joint off, the axle looks fine but the diff side looks strange. I think something is going on and was hoping someone could advise. looks like there is a little metal seal that is loose and moving around and the cv joint connect is pushed out and needs to go back in. advise is much appreciated. cheers guys.

Have you pulled the driveshaft completely out of the gearbox? If not do that and see what the end of the driveshaft/axle stub looks like.

Is that one of he CV joint balls protruding from the joint? :)

Might be a good idea to use one of those heavy duty CV joints kits. From memory they replace the components in the inner joints (the one you broke)

It comes out no problem. Just give it a little pull and the entire driveshaft should pop straight out. A circlip on the end of the axle stub is the only thing holding it in.

Would be a good idea to replace the rubber axle seal on the gearbox end when you put the new/rebuilt shaft back in. Common for them to leak when disturbed.

The gearbox fluid will also come out with the shaft so be prepared for 3-4 litres to come gushing out.

Those circlips can be tight if they're never been popped before. I found a piece of wood (soft enough not to damage the shaft) and a mallet was needed to pop the shafts the first time. Now that they've been pulled they're a lot easier and a decent yank will see them come out.
