Voltage drop = noisy power steering

At idle my power steering unit is really noisy, increase revs and it stops. Has anyone experienced this and how did you fix it. A sparky friend said u can fit a voltage regulator (I think that's what he called it) but said it could be costly. The power steering unit works fine.
