Car Blowing black smoke as soon as I get to 4K RPM and hit boost

G'day all

So I recent got together with friend and changed the timeing belt, water pump and starter moter to new ones. Since then the car has been putting out code 2 4 which I think is the code for Intake Air Temp Sensor. I have no idea where this sensor is as I thought it was built into the AFM or somewhere along there.

To add to that as soon as I hit around 4K rpm which is when my boost comes on, its blows black smoke out back, almost as if the exhaust gas it ascaping directly out of the turbo.

Any help would be appreciated. I am currently waiting on the following parts to arrive thinking it might make a difference.
  • Distributor cap
  • Spark plugs and leads

Thankyou in advance

Is it black or has a blue tinge to it (oil)?
Have you checked compression across all the cylinders?

You mentioned the intake temp sensor error. It could be the ECU overfueling not knowing the intake temps - aka 'safe' mode - especially when on boost, its more critical your running rich than lean.

    Hi Pete,

The smoke deffinitle looks black and not a blue tinge to it. I have not checked compression, will get my mechanic to though when I take it in.

The car is running very rich I have noticed as I can almost watch the fuel meter go down if I am reving it hard. Any idea how I could cleat the code 24?

    Ravi,
A bit of a random thought on running rich, may be worth checking fuel pressure as high fuel pressure will cause richness in general.  Clearing the code (in the short term) is just the usual paperclip between the terminals at the diagnostic box.
I haven't heard of any known issues with the temp sensor in the flap type airflow meters so its most likely a dodgy connection outside the box.

    Hi Ian,
You could be right with the fuel pressure, ever since I replaced my stock fuel pump with a 190lph fuel pump it has been using a lot more fuel. It's never had a tune to my knowledge either. I pretty sure I tried that method of clearing the code but I guess it keeps coming back because well its still happening ahaha.

Are you or any one able to point me to this connection that could possible be dodgy? perhgaps a pic of it in your car. I have a Gen 2 3sgte engine the car is a 1992 MR2 GT (JDM model).

Could the oxygen sensor have anything to do with the car running too rich? is it worth replacing?

Is the car running the factory ecu? Any other little boxes spliced in to the ecu harness or anything?

Car is running factory ECU and no other little boxes are spliced into it.

I'm have a feeling on a gen2 engine you need to bore the fuel rail when fitting a larger pump

Oxygen sensor wouldn't be having any effect in the case you're describing as it really only comes into play in fairly steady state 'cruise' conditions. The rest of the time the ECU is just running straight from a set of maps. The changed fuel pump does make it look more like a fuel pressure issue. Unfortunately I don't have a gauge so have no easy way to check. However, you could inspect the pressure regulator (small mushroom shaped device with a vacuum line and a couple of fuel lines in and out) which I think is located near the passenger side end of the fuel rail (it may be at the other end). The thing to check is whether the vacuum line is connected or not and whether it is open or blocked.

The regulator is designed to increase fuel pressure when boost is applied through the vacuum line. It is possible that the regulator is stuck or has failed in a high pressure position or that the new fuel pump is flowing more fuel than the regulator can handle.

I'm offline (apart from phone) so can't post a pic of the diagnostic box location, but its pretty obvious at the rear of the engine bay on the drivers side

Also check all your intercooler pipes and connections, if there is a loose hose or clamp etc, your letting metered air escape under boost and its fuelling for that air, and it will run rich.

Good news everyone! The problem did in fact did turn out to be some loose inter cooler piping.the little connector on top of my blow off valve where the vacuum hose connects to was also incredibly loose, I didn't think that could cause such a problem so did even bother to tighten it.

The car is driving fine again. Anyone on here with a gfb GeForce 2 electronic boost controller? Mine is acting weird at the moment if car is idle or driving it will just display on screen a really high number like 75 and won't change or anything. Then sometimes I turn it on and it just keeps flashing over boost, even when idling! im thinking into definitely something to do with the actual unit and not the car this time, otherwise I'm sure the car would have broken down due to the constant over boosting.

The high number at idle is likely your realtime vacuum reading.
My electronic turbsmart controller does this also.

I wouldnt be surprised if it is the unit as I have a G-Force 2  as well and it turned out to be a dud. It would do its own thing no matter how much dialling in you did on it. I currently only use it as a readout and have disabled the boost control side of it. Using a trusty MBC instead.
