Mandi's blue doorstop (AW11)

Hi everyone,

Fresh AW11 owner here! I have been looking for a few months to get my hands on an AW11 and finally was able to succeed (thanks to John one of the members on here). I took possession of an 88 Blue AW11 on the weekend, manual, 4AGE smallport.

I currently also have an S14 as a daily driver and a 180sx which is my dedicated track car so the MR2 is a definite change to what I am used to.  I was able to pick one up locally and that did need a little work to it which I am happy for to be able to put my spin on the car and bring it up to good condition.

So here we have some pictures!

Two photos my partner took of it :)

The interior was one of the things that needs some work, so I pulled out the old one and replaced it with the one John had given me with the car. I also pulled out a lot of the plastics sanded them back and dyed them with a proper vinyl dye as they were blacked with paint which isn’t the correct way to dye trims etc.

So this is how it sits at the moment, have lots more little things to do on it but I ran out of weekend haha.

    Welcome to AW11 ownership :)

Its awesome to see someone else make the choice to enjoy retro 80s angles and driving bliss.

Reading your post you have a selection or curvy 90's Nissans. Im curious then what led you to want an AW11 over other MR2s and/or other cars? What AW11 attribute/s were appealing to you?

    PS.
Nice Job finding one with a good paint job and being able to get a replacement dash. I have one with a blue interior and its no easy task trying to find replacement trim. I am infinitely jealous.

Need Help Getting Parts, If you know of or have the following please let me know.
Aw11 Stock Blue Dashboard, AW11 Stock Blue gear knob, AW11 SC Front Struts.

While driving an AW11 this the most threatened you will ever make me feel:

    Hi Mandi
That was quick replacing the dash. Great Job!
The interior looks much better now.
I see you did not like my ricey seat covers. Neither did my son when I put similar ones in his AW11.( He has an AW11, a SW20 Turbo and a new 86) He has a great paying job.
You saw one of my red MR2's on Saturday.

The white one in the avatar picture is another one I have. That one has factory fitted fog lights. Apparently very rare.
    It is also supercharged.
I have driven different ones on MR2 cruises but haven't gone on any cruises lately.
I am currently working on my black MR2. I had the rear screen replaced today after some idiot used a sling shot to bust it.
    Continue the good work.
    Cheers
    John

    Thankyou!

Yea that are great little cars :)

Hrm well I have always liked pointy cars, and always admired the AW11. Of late I have felt I needed a change with my cars and having seen a few AW11's here and there it got under my skin. My partner owns an AE86 and experiencing his 16v 4age I was impressed by power delivery and potential for fun weekend drives!

Have to thank John for that as he provided it with the car I just had to fit him up :)

    Hi there John!
Yep I did it that afternoon and next morning :)
Haha yea I love the look of the factory seats, I would ideally like the leather originals or the blue/black ones down the track. Oh he has lots of toys too!

Oh nice, I love rare factory options for cars :)
That's really disappointing to hear about your black MR2, that would make me really angry!! Some people have no respect for other peoples property.

A little update, I discovered Monday night that I have no dash lights, so last night I pulled apart the dash suspecting it may of been the rheostat but I found that the wires had already been cut and tampered with so I went to working fixing it all up so I now have dash lights and self assured that that part of the wiring is all good :) (I'm an auto electrician by trade so I get pedantic about things like this haha)

Also have started hunting down little interior replacement parts, I notice that some people want to charge top dollar! IE a wreckers in Adelaide want $55 for the inner door handle :o

    Hi Mandi
Let me know what parts you are looking for.
I have many bits and pieces that I may be able to help you with. (Maybe for free in exchange for some electrical work I need done on my SW20)
Anyway before you go paying exorbitant prices for parts give me a call or pm me.
    Cheers

Black Inner dash surround piece (the part that the headlight and wiper stalks are on)
    Black handbrake lever
    Black gear boot surround
    Black passengers boot carpet
    Black boot/fuel levers

    Hi Mandi
I will see what I can find from what you mentioned.
With the interior door handles the all seem to go gray ( I am assuming you want interior handles and not exterior.)
It will be this weekend before I get the chance to look.
If I have blue colours are you able to dye them with vinyl paint?

    Electrical Problems.

My problem with my sw20 is that the headlights (both low and high beam) do not work. The low beams used to work until I sprayed the stalk with silicon spray thinking that would fix the high beam problem. It didn't.
I have checked all fuses, high beam relay, power to the globes and the globes themselves and still cannot find the problem.
I have removed the light switch (stalk on the steering wheel, unlike the AW11) and tested it with a multimeter. It seems to be doing what it is supposed to but I am not an auto electrician so I probably do not really know. I have checked the earthing points (removing them and cleaning them) but no go.
I have even dismantled the high beam low beam  switch(part of the stalk) and there are no burnt contacts.
The strange part is that the high beam indicator light on the dash is always on whether I am in low beam or high beam or use the flasher. And my driving lights come on both on low and high beam(They should only come on when I use the high beam).
My thinking is that the high beam switch will not disengage and that may be the problem. Also when I tested power to the globes I noticed that there was power to all three prongs.
My understanding of Toyota lighting systems is that one of the prongs becomes an earth depending on the position of the light switch.
I have wiring diagrams etc so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    John

You and your partner respectively have 2 of my most favourite cars of all time. To have a AW11 and AE86 in your life must be amazing :)

I have always loved the late 70's and 80's wedge design of cars as well. If I could have in my garage a AW11, AE86 and last gen Supra Celica I would be a very happy man.

I couldn't agree more, the 4age motors are amazing. Power delivery is nice, they rev fast and smoothly plus have a great engine note. The first time I drove a Ae86 I was hooked on the motor. If you ever get the chance try driving a AW11 with a 4agze. Its like having a 6 cylinder version of the same engine. Power deliver and response is the same but with so much more fun torque. In the end I had to get a 4agze example, the feeling of these motors are intoxicating.

Hope you enjoy many more gnarly and radical years with your retro 80's pocket rocket :)

Yes that no worries. Hrm I would prefer original black ones,I'm happy to wait to find some if you dont have black :)

You are correct, Toyota is fond of using negatively earthed systems. If you have power at all three prongs at the head light this indicates that the earth for the headlights is NOT switching on, so anything in the earthed part of the circuit could be causing this, suspiciously the switch, if you have another working headlight switch I would say swap it over to eliminate the switch being the issue. Let me know how you go.

Haha they look very good together :) He also has a 230rwkw SR20det in a KE70, though I have kept my same powered (230rwkw) SR in a Nissan body.
