^ ahh.. good times.

Random news time..:
I haven't driven this car since the 31/10 <_<
Was in a crap car accident on the 1/11 (passenger) and among other things, I broke 8 bones in my right foot. Big cast, etc. Basically i wont be able to drive until February. :(
Little Red was playing funny buggers at the same time anyway, so as of yesterday its back at the mechanics getting sorted. power is badly down, lots of blue smoke, squark at idle, etc. will be Geting checked out, and possibly dynoed to see how bad it is, and whats wrong. i'd hope for near 80rwkw once sorted, but if it doesnt get close i'll have to look into further options for it.
car was also looking a bit sad after sitting in the sun for 3 weeks too. :(

in other random news, Rota finally released a fake of the Work Meister CR 01! The Rota Kyusha!

****s similar! complete with the same finishes! I'd be hard pressed telling the difference on some of them. As usual its a bit rough for Work, but funny nonetheless...

other than that. nothing.
I want to drive my adub again... :(

That's so awesome 3 cars with the same colour for a cruise. The AW11s are like twins :) and that MX-5 looks quite the contender!
Those Rotas look really light.
Very unfortunate to hear about the crash but the most important thing is you still breathing, I hope the others are okay too.

yyeah.. wasnt ideal. bit sad.

On a cheerier note, that drive was a good day. Me n Lindsay were cruising around the Healsville area, and met (craig?) with the NA8 who was driving around also. nice mx5 too - low, enkei's, rollbar... etc. just fun.

Randomly browsing through an old Hyperrev during my sit-time today, i came across the HKS intercooler kit for the SW20. havent got a pic to share, but damn it looked similar to the Intercooler that i have here.
had a browse around on the internet, and found these pics of one of the actual kits. Its used, and sold on RPMGARAGE.

looked back at the pictures of my unknown kit; which I had originally thought it was just a mishmash of piping, joiners, and maybe a OEM core from some random car.

similar style core, same direction fins, same welds at the tank edges, same style of stupid brackets hanging off the sides, same colour piping, same colour hose joiners..
..aaaaand came off the car the HKS SC Kit was off.
has no markings i can see (like the HKS SW20 one), but i really wouldnt be suprised if it is a HKS unit now. I'd guessed it had been on the car since day one, so it woudl make sense for it to be a HKS unit.. whether or not its even for the AW11 at all!
gonna try and track down some early HKS info. im curious now... aaaaand have a bit of time sitting on my arse eh..!

all for now.

one month on...

foot/leg/anke combo is still pretty sad..

but as it turns out, so is little red.

Late November i took it off to the mechanic to get sorted. since i dont need the car until february, progress is slow.. but its getting fixed.

- a compression check showed it was baaadly down on one cylinder.
- head pulled off, showed no damage. HG fine, etc..
- intake manifold strip down revealed a busted TVIS plate. two cylinders were always open, while the other two worked. explains the painful down-low power in the last few weeks of driving.
- motor continues to be pulled down.
- bam. two of my 42,000km old, genuine smallport toyota pistons are cracked in the piston ringland. urgh...

New pistons have been ordered, got a replacement TVIS, and it's all going back together. The new pistons are hypatec smallport pistons. still cast, but supposedly better and worth a shot.

This time it will be going on the dyno, to check it all out a bit better. Need to make sure its not having some sort of fuel supply issue. its all hard.. its just so damn old. :(

annoying having to rebuild it twice in two years, but ehh... i just want it running for when i can drive again. looking forward to this soso much.. :'(

oooootherthanthat... unposted picture set from august, to freshen up this page... :)

Lil red hasnt had any new **** bought for it for a few months.. because i've pre-occupied myself with a new toy. :D
I'd never imported a car before, so it was an interesting process. learned alot.
browsed the SEVS list, decided to go for an EVO 5, and then got searching. it was probably 2 months of trawling the auctions before this one came up. 50-60,000 cars go up for auction every week in Japan... of which 5-6 may be Evo 5's.
long story short, here it is. complied but unregistered:

i still cant believe these are so cheap! A proper Group-A Homologation Rally car.. and a successful one at that! the Evo 5 won the WRC in 1998 (the evo 5 was only produced for this one year - awesome), winning 7 of 13 rounds, including Australia. :P
it has an adjustable aluminium wing, aluminium bonnet and (wide!) guards, brake ducts, tacked on rear flares, big front mount air and oil coolers.. with water spray.. etc etc.. so geekily rad. :P

this one in particular seemed extra nice.
original books, tons of paperwork, and absolutely covered in quality parts. was a grade 4C car, and looks very smart. :)

leeeeeeel reehhhh...!
Its been so long.
not much time left now. At this stage ill be back to driving early April sometime.. :)

Me and my Brother went to a classic japanese car show in lil red a couple weeks back. hilariously won best mid-engine sports car.. by default. the AW11 MR2 is the only 'classic' Japanese mid-engine sports car.. and even in years to come, the Toyota MR2 and Honda NSX are pretty much IT for Japan's Mid-engine adventures...
hah

car got LOTS of love though, which is nice for MR2's in general. so many people just forget about them...

obviously the car is back from the mechanics anyway. just waiting until i can drive it again, from which point i'll run it in etc...
some wannabe-artistic pics of the broken bits:

first pic shows one of two near-identical busted pistons. those are great chunks of ring-land that have fallen out.
the pics of the TVIS just show the disconnecting centre. pretty much eww...

the car got
- New pistons. Hypatec brand (uleh? ..mechanic reckons he'd heard good things..)
- secondhand, working TVIS plate
- new oxy sensor
- AFM tested.. was fine..
- Adjustable fuel pressure reg.
- remaining EGR gear was turfed..
- All the other gaskets n whatnot on the way back to complete were replaced again obviously... aaand some bearings.

now.. the adj fuel pressure reg was to sort (..bandaid?) what seemed to be an underfueling issue.
on its first stint on a dyno after rebuild, the car was running stupidly lean all the way through (peaking at a ridiculous 16:1 odd supposedly..). the fuel reg was added, a little more pressure given, and dynoed again. i have no power numbers as it wasnt really that sort of dyno run, but the graph shows it making more power over the entire rev range...!
either way, I'm stoked.

just have to run it in now, and see how i go..

aaaaaand this cars being good and patient. just vaiting...

What happened to your leg? Was wondering why your Evo hadn't been registered yet.

About the fuel pressure regulator, I'd certainly recommend giving it a proper run on the dyno & diagnosing the root cause. If it's having intermittent/inconsistent fueling, the fpr won't solve it & you can still pop your newly rebuilt motor.

^ i mentioned it in a post somewhere on this page, but i was a passenger in a bad car accident over 4.5 months ago. 8 broken bones in the foot/ankle area was the reason for the cast..
still not driving.

As for the fueling, that's pretty much my worry. It feels like a bandaid, hiding a bigger Issue.
once the engine is run in - 1000km or thereabouts - in late april sometime, ill get it serviced, then go for a dyno run (and get someone else's opinion). I worry about AFR's nowadays, and want to be able to confidently give it tons of revs without the same thing happening.

thanks!
no real plan for the Evorution - just gradually cleaning it up. I enjoy looking at it, and fiddling with it.. so no real rush to drive it. I still love driving the AW11 too much to care, and cant imagine its any better to drive. its just faster. :S
I'm still on my P's until December this year, so cant legally drive the fkn thing anyway. its a Ridiculous 3point fine nowadays, even though im well-and-truly OLD enough to drive it, i guess I'm still not mature enough in Vicroads eyes. Feels like I've been on my P's longer than anyone this side of bendigo.. <_<
