Project MR2 - click noise in gear box / engine sitting off square / timing

Hi All,

I recently purchased a MR2 1993 Rev 2 Turbo unseen, and landed one big project.

A few issues where any information will help;

1. Click noise in the gear box as you turn the wheel.  14 clicks per revolution.  Any ideas?

2. Engine shows the drivers side engine mount as pulled out the side of the mount.  All other mounts look ok, but the engine is not sitting straight across the vehicle.  Doesnt the engine just square up by the engine mounts. Any ideas?

3. Timing sounds off.  Any information on how to manually check the timing of both cams etc.  There are arrows on the cams.  Any ideas how to check becuase nothing should be trusted on this car.  Any ideas?

Any ideas or advice (apart from burn it) :)

Thanks

Tony

    1. Click noise could be anything really but MIGHT be the wheel bearing.
    2. Mounts might all be worn or your mount points themselves might be stuffed.
    3. Timing notches on cam gears align to marks on head. Just google images it, easier to see where the marks are.

    Cheers TrackMR2.

    1. The click sound is coming from the gear box (got the car on a hoist).  Taken drivers wheel and side cv shaft (I think you call it that - not the piece that connects to the gearbox but the one next to it).   It only makes the click noise by rotating the drivers side wheel / shaft.  When rotating the passenger wheel it does not make the click click click noise when rotating.  When you rotate the passenger wheel and hold the drivers side then the left will make the click noise in the gear box.  Any further ideas what to look at or replace?

    2. I will order new mounts.

    3. Cheers I have found the pictures and looks two teeth out to the left.

    1. Sounding like your diff. You don't have a lsd in there do you, hence why one side makes the noise when rotating? I'm just guessing though, I can't tell you exactly, even if I saw the car I'm not sure I'd be able to pick that problem.

    2. Check your mounts before ordering new ones, I haven't seen them so just guessing again as to what it could be. Should be able to see if the rubber is eaten away.

Can anyone recommend MR2 specialist mechanics who maybe able to fix the differential noise that clicks when the drivers side wheel rotates.  When passenger side is rotated the diff does not make a click noise, only when drivers side is rotated.  The click is much louder when rotating the wheel in reverse.  It makes approximately 14 clicks per rotation of the wheel.

I dont mind paying for a mechanic as long as they are fixing it not educating themselves by trial and error = huge bill and problem not fixed.

Any mechanics recommended for MR2 turbo in Mildura or Sydney or Brisbane.

    Cheers

we spoke on the phone about the diff

mounts. common to see a mix of turbo and NA on a car. they are different , as are brackets. all in stock. it should sit square and level

timing.... marks on gears and tin plate behind them. TDC is a bit harder. only some crank gears have a mark. take out a plug and use a dial gauge or TDC indicator. **** of a job

I had my timing 1 tooth out at the crank and it would barely start (with the distributor rotated to its limit) So if yours is starting well and running it may be something else.

The clicking sound from the gearbox could be the vehicle speed sensor. It has a little plastic gear on it, which meshes with a plastic gear on the outside of the diff. If those gears aren't meshing properly, or if they are worn, you will hear a clicking noise.
Assuming that your car has an electronic speedo, instead of mechanical like the early models, then the 'sensor' I'm referring to will look like this:

It's on top of the gearbox.

There is an extensive build thread for my car here: http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=18316

Problem of the noise from the diff seems to be a broken speedo sensor (mechanical sits onto diff next to engine mount) and the second section of the speedo cable. I found the cable listed in the usa.
Can anyone recommend where to buy the Speedo sensor (mechanical) or a part number. Toyota does not have a listing of the import parts, toyota at Penrith wants the japanese plate details that I can not find.
Any help or suggestions is much appreciated.

    Hi Tony,Have a look at www.partsbase.org
Then try Amayama.com to bring the parts in from Japan or Dubai.
