Gen3 3sge Cam Cover Gasket Replacement

Hi all,

So I have been trying to find information on replacing the Cam Cover gasket + O-ring gaskets (spark plug area) for a gen3 3sge (as mine are leaking) an I can't seem to find anything! Is this a difficult job? As I have been trying to get quote from mechanics but they don't seem to have a clue on what's involved..
Could someone point out the steps to do so, an/or a reasonable shop in Victoria (preferably Mornington Peninsula area, but willing to travel) I could get this done at?

I own a 1997 MR2 GT. An sorry if I have posted this in the wrong area.
I'm new to the MR2 scene an any help would be greatly appreciated.

its a fairly simple job. the gaskets are around $70 for the pair, depending on who you can get to supply.

ive sent a link of this thread to a guy I know in vic that'll be able to do it. just not sure if hes in the same area of vid

Any idea of the cost for a genuine gasket set? And I assume the intake manifold has to be removed?

I've done it a few times on both my Gen 2 and 3 N/A's now.
 
I took most of the intake system off to do it (just because the space is good), although I left the manifold itself on the car.
It's a PITA to remove the manifold (ideally engine out is the best way to take it all apart), and you can do it with just the plenum off if you can fit a socket in there.
 
I got a genuine rocker cover gasket set from NZ for ~$50, but that was a one-off. Going through CMI Toyota will have you paying at least twice that, and you'll be waiting for ex-Japan stock. So minimum 3 week wait for it. You CAN get them through Supercheap Auto/Sprints/REPCO(maybe?) as well. Although, since it's not genuine, there's no guarantee for quality there.
they ARE a lot cheaper, though. And will usually arrive in a couple of days.
 
AFAIK, then Gen 2 and 3 gaskets are the same, which means you'll also be able to get Celica ones, and I think even the 5S gasket might fit (Don't quote me on that). There's a lot of interchangeable parts between them.
 
This is my experience with the gaskets. Maybe in different states you'l have more luck with getting a genuine, but in SA, pickings are slim at best.

So I've found a mechanic that is able to install the gasket for me at a very reasonable price and is experienced with the 3S
Just have to order from Toyota

I would strongly recommend you only use genuine Toyota gaskets.
You could try Amayama trading for them.
This is a critical area on the motor that is prone to leak (as you have found out).
When I replaced mine I also put a smear of silicone on the head surface where the surfaces mate.
This is in addition to the areas that the Service manual recommends.

Yeah I agree with you, using a aftermarket gasket wasn't an option with this car.

And thanks for that, I will take that part no. to Toyota an order the silicone as well :)
