Best mechanic in far north coast NSW or South East Queensland for MR2 spyders??!

Hi,

I just joined this forum because i need advice from people who know about Mr2s. My 2001 mr2 spyder is having issues with going into reverse and sometimes stalling when it is idling in neutral (particularly during cold weather). I have taken it to multiple mechanics including Toyota branded ones and experienced independent mechanics BUT none of them know what is wrong with the car. None of the mechanics in my area understand how the SMT transmission operates. Does anyone recommend a mechanic that is particularly good with the SMT of mr2 spyders? Preferably a mechanic between Port Macquarie (NSW) and Brisbane (QLD).

This issue has been going on for about a year now and has cost me $2000+ in going to different mechanics. Its very frustrating.

Thanks,
Daniel

Well there's your first issue is anyone is telling you it's an auto. Spyder smt's have a manual gearbox and hydrolic shift and clutch.
Has anyone has changed the gearbox oil? They haven't put auto trans fluild in?

Is your smt light on? It's the ! Next the abs.
What happens when you put it into reverse, does it crunch or smt box just flash at you? Can you put it into gear then reverse?
If the lights on smt screen sem normal then sounds like the clutch.

With stalling does it happen any other time when it's not freezing.
I had similar starting issues when freezing, I clean the maf sensor which is on top of your air box.

Also when was the last time smt fluid was changed.

I hope you can find answers and know what to ask for.

Defiantly have a chat with road and track.

we have fixed more of them than i care to remember and currently have 3 of them from interstate being repaired here.

many of them work out to be relatively simple things that have failed (not necessarily cheap unfortunately), but occasionally you get real tricky ones. if your prior mechanics have not sorted it, then it probably is a complex or infrequent fault.

its not really possible to help you much on a  forum like this, but if you post up the EXACT problem (symptoms), then some of us can offer some sensible comments..

for example, does the R light not illuminate and it wont go into reverse?.. all the time, occasionally, when starting from cold etc etc?????

the SMT warning light stays on ???
