Service advice required: Rocker cover gasket + low oil sensor
Hey all,
I’m going to be servicing my 97 Bathurst with the main goal of replacing the rocker cover gasket and low oil level sensor.
I found I need 2 gaskets for the rocker cover
P/n: 1121388460 (outer gasket)
P/n: 1121488460 (small inner gasket)
Are there any other parts I need to do this job, gaskets, seals, washers, etc? And any advice for someone trying this for the first time on a SW20?
Also with the low oil level sensor, is it simply just undoing the 4 bolts and removing the faulty sensor and replacing it with the new? I couldn’t see anything in the service manual about it.

you need toyota fipg to go in the corners of the cam caps and dizzy where the gasket goes to seal properly. you should see where exactly in the bgb. if not I can upload pic.

Thats them, also make sure it hospital clean prior to putting FIPG on or it'll never seal.

I used black automotive silicone (can't recall the make and model) and it hasn't leaked. Cleaned thoroughly, wiped with metho so there was no oil etc.

Don't buy any Toyota fipg I will save you the $40 and give you a tube. Of its N/A then you will need the intake manifold and surge tank gaskets I think. Either Eric or Danny (DVS_MR2) will be able to let you know I think Danny even has a list of part numbers I got for him a while ago.

Not sure about the Gen3 but on the Gen2 anyway, as well as around the cam bearing caps, it was recommended to me to also put a smear of sealant along the rear edge of the top of the head where oil tends to pool because of the tilt of the motor.
I also put a smear on the head where the inside gasket sits.
With the Gen 2 you can't re-tighten all the holding studs after you refit the intake manifold, so you must be careful to tighten them carefully in sequence, but don't over tighten.

Hey the part numbers you will need to fix the rocker cover leak are below.. Which I still have sitting here as I have never got around to replacing since planning 3S swaps :)
1 x Rocker cover gasket (main) 11213-88460

Good to know, Road and Track. I will keep you in mind for when I need parts again as the gaskets have arrived from Japan already. My local Toyota pretty much said we don't stock them any more and wished me luck finding them.
I started the service. Drained the oil, swapped out the low level oil sensor (went better than I expected, the old sensor looked fine, so hopefully its not a electrical fault), flushed the car again with some spare oil and replaced the oil filter. I also wanted to replace the gearbox oil, bought the 24mm socket but I'm weak and can't crack the filler or drain bolts. Hahaha. Looks like I will need a long breaker bar or something.
I'm having second thoughts about doing the rocker cover gasket myself. I removed the air box but have stalled, just feeling a bit daunted by it since I will have to remove/unplug/disconnect lots just to reach the cover.

Eric invited me around to his place and gave me a helping hand to replace the rocker cover gasket. He was heard saying something along the lines of "this is the worst oil leak I have seen". The spark plugs were just visible in the wells. After lots of cleaning we reassembled and now the car runs great. Once I got home I found a long breaker bar and cracked the filler and drain plugs on the gearbox and replaced the oil.
A shout out to Eric for being a champ and giving me a hand. I Learnt a lot and feel a lot more comfortable working around the engine :D!
