Changing FWD gearbox config to MR2 config?

There's a first for everything and that thing earlier today was driving my car home with a shagged diff...

So it's happy days finding a new box now since it's not just the diff - grinding noises when decelerating even in neutral. LSD would be nice but not sure I wanna spend a fortune since I was gonna let her go soon. At the same time there's not a lot of occurances (intentional anyways) when the gearbox is split from the engine so as much as I want to be frugal, this is somewhat a rare and ideal opportunity for "upgrade". And what better gearbox to match then one that came from a BEAMSSS!!

Skipping past the unnecessary rant: is changing FWD S54 config to MR2 config a simple job?

Was the MR2 Beams S54 any different to the standard 3SGE S54 gearbox?

Why are you thinking of letting her go?

Just swap the MR2 S54 centre case and shifter parts over. It's the same process as doing C52/C56 in the AW11.

or if like me and you tried to get the 5th gear off so you can change the casing but couldn't without breaking something.

so I used a 2.5mm drill quick bit on some long extensions. wraped a spacer around it to keep it centered in the shaft hole. then drilled an oversize hole from the outside. got some 28mm inside diameter pipe cut it to fit then JB welded it on the box. thus far has held up for years. thats on a corolla C56

Thanks for the pics mate, always helps. If I find a cheap replacement might just go with that since I don't have a ton of cash or time waiting around for a Beams S54. I mean this cars got too much grip for it's own good lol LSD wouldn't be dramatic improvement anyways
    But we shall see...

Are you sure the Beams S54 is LSD? The one i got in the halfcut doesn't appear to be LSD. I was going to stick with my existing S54 as i know its in great condition...

    Hi Rick,

I would have thought that the original Transaxle in your 1997 SW20 is an E153.
Why not stay with that ? & fit the Beams to it, when you do the switcheroo.

No, my SW20 is a NA Bathurst, which i believe has a S54. I am thinking of using my existing gearbox though as i know its in good condition with no issues.

some not all beams boxes got an lsd. iirc the beams lsd will have a big sqaure edged bar when looking through the centre, unlike the open and turbo lsd boxes which have the more hex/tapered edged bar through the guts.

Thanks Eric, I'll include it in the shortlist
Just an FYI Rick me as well as other NA owners have had their diffs kick the bucket in the high kms (150,000km +) region but yours is a lowish km yeh? Then again I did buy a lemon, first 2 tranny oil changes were pretty bad
And yeh top one is LSD, bottom pic is open diff
