Gear oil change
Hey all, I'm changing the gearbox fluid to mt 90 shockproof. I know nothing about Transaxles and would like to know if the transaxle is the LSD and the gearbox. And do they both feed from the same filler hole as I can only find one, tia guys I had a look in the manual and can't find nothing about it.

There is only one filler hole on the E153 which does the gears and LSD. I'm pretty sure the factory LSD is a sealed unit though. I think the majority of aftermarket LSDs use the gearbox oil so you need to take that into account.

Hi Kyle, Regarding weather your box has an LSD, only acturate way of knowing is to pop out a drive shaft & look inside. Read this article (link below) from Terry (Road & Track). http://www.roadandtrack.n...ts/E_gearbox_short.pdf Drain hole is the lowest plug on gearbox, fill hole is a little higher (they are close together), both on the passenger side of gearbox.

I'd look at an alternative oil. My tranny didn't last long with mt90. Heard a few common experiences around the globe too.
Suggest something like Caltex Easyshift which is GL4 75/90. Spot on for the E153 from my experience.
Factory LSD is viscous / sealed unit. Main reason I never went for an aftermarket mechanical lsd is the difficulty finding a suitable tranny fluid to satisfy both diff & gears.

No, but my gearbox was rebuilt & is still in perfect condition. I'd start with the Caltex oil & see how you go. If the box is on its way out, you can try an ATF (Dextron III) to prolong a transmission rebuild.

I'm confused, doesn't this guy have a manual gearbox? Why are you guys suggesting he uses automatic transmission fluid?

When you used the mt90 did you use heavy or lightweight The heavy shock proof is rated up to 70w 250 but internally 75w90 from what I remember I was going to go mt90 I might go lightweight . But ill check the caltex fluid first. Cheers

Toyota actually recommends ATF as an option on some manual boxes.

I ran redline shockproof lightweight on my last e153 and it felt great. I emptied out mt90 to put it in.

The Toyota spec for the e153 is dextron III ATF,other good oils for Toyota transaxles are castrol VMX 80. heavier oils will make the box feel notchy and hard to shift espeshaly when cold.
