Whispy smoke or maybe steam - Was head gasket - Fixed

Hi guys,

My baby has been running great for ages, but just the last few days has been a tiny bit rough starting up first thing in the morning.  Settles down after about 20-30 seconds.  Haven't noticed anything else until this morning.  Had been at work for about hour & half, went down the road about 2k, parked for a couple of minutes.  When I came back I noticed there was a little whispy smoke or steam coming from one exhaust.  Checked in mirrors when started & didn't see anything, got out while she was still running & checked.  Just a little whispy smoke/steam.  Same amount but from the other exhaust when I got back to office.
I usually check the oil & water every couple of weeks.  Check while cold.  Haven't had to top anything up, no new oil spots on garage floor or anything.  Will check when I've been home for a while to give her time to cool down.
Any ideas on whether this could be a serious thing or not??.......... hoping not.  Spark plugs & leads replaced in about October last year, oil change 2 months ago.  About 220,000k.
Just remember when you are answering that I can't really check much myself.

 Cheers

Condensation forms in exhausts, heat it up and it comes out as steam.

Get your schnozz down into it, what does it smell like?

Condensation in the form of steam can often be seen coming from the exhaust after startup on cold mornings.
Quite normal, but should stop after the motor warms up.

Obviously the cooolant can only be checked when cold, but if checking the oil when the motor is cold, the level should be slightly above the top of the cross hatch. If you then start the motor the level will drop because the oil galleries will have filled up.
My Toyota Owner's Manual actually recomends that you start the motor, let it run for a minute or so, stop the motor and then check the oil level.

Being parked for a few minutes better hope that all the condensation has gone away otherwise you have quite a lot there!

Agreed smell it. Your rough when cold issue could be a few things, first thing though would be to gather some info, like pulling out the spark plugs and making sure they're not cracked and all look similar, no excess buildup or gapping on individual plugs.
Also can't hurt pulling the positive lead off your battery and letting your ECU reset, might take up to an hour for it to be fully drained on its own, pumping the brake pedal helps.
ECU will then relearn and might help your cold start.

+1 for checking spark plugs.  The copper ones only really last about 5000km, and I would guess you've done more than that since October last year.
My Gen 3 3sgte had a similar problem, running rough in the morning, so changed the spark plugs and it fixed the problem - and they were only around 4000km old.

Ok........   Thanks for the advice guys.................
Drove 1 1/2 km, stopped engine, little whispy smoke/steam.  Drove another 5km, checked with engine running, no smoke/steam, checked smell too....., nothing really.  Turned engine off, still no smoke/steam.
Waited 1/2 hr.  Checked oil & coolant reservoir.  all good....
Spark plugs:  don't think they are the copper ones.  I said I didn't want the cheapies, but not the most expensive ones either.  Cost $16 each (originally he wanted $22, but I asked if he could be better  ).  Think he said they should last 40 or 50k.

lol Maj., you credit me with too much know how.  I watched when someone changed the spark plugs & leads, but do it myself?................ hhmmm don't think so.  I could probably pull the lead off the battery tho. uummm where's the ECU live, what does it look like?, does every car have one?, lol

Just quickly, please don't pull the + lead off the batt first.  Its always neg off first and on last.  This prevents sparking etc.

Your ecu is in the boot, on the 'firewall' towards the pass side of the car.  If you pull the carpet back you'll see it (square silver box), but no reason you need to actually get to it.  You could pull the ECU fuse out, I'm sure this'll have the same affect but will be way easier.  You'll find this in the eng bay fuse box.

^^^^ thanks.  Hadn't got to the battery yet.  Fuse definitely sounds easier.  Less effort needed.

NRMA Man said I could possibly drive back to Newcastle.  Might get 10k down the road or 50k & same thing happen.  Maybe not happen.  He is fairly sure it's head gasket.  Didn't want to risk it on that road especially at night.  She is now safely tucked away at work while I have one of the spare utes.  I'll be able to drive her 1 block to mechanic on monday.

I was asked a couple of months ago if I had to get another car would I get another 2. I had no hesitation in saying yes of course. .... starting to think as much as I love mr MR2 maybe they should be left for ppl who can work on them themselves or have open ended bank balances.
But I have come this far with her. Don't think I could sell her. And let go of the lifestyle and friends she came with.

    3sgte time?!

Choices choices.  Turbo, V6 has been suggested & I'm sure Tree is thinking "Go the Beams".
Will get mechanic to look tomorrow.  Pretty sure head didn't crack so that's a good thing.
Fix head gasket on this motor???, rebuild this one??   get another 3SGE motor with less KM????
Sleeping on it....................................... Don't need to make decision immediately.
But don't much like parking the ute.

Actually, a 2gr v6 conversion would probably suit you better than a turbo. Linear power, torque and a decent upgrade from the NA.
    Decisions haha

Feeling not so "aaarrrrggghhhh" this morning.
Started ok this morning, drove 1 block to mechanic.  When he took the oil cap off there was no white stuff there, so that's a good sign.  Not a motor out job to do head gasket (as per knowledgeable MR2 ppl), so that's good.  Still a big job if that is the problem tho.  They will run tests today & let me know.
