1990 mr2 Ferrari replica

Hi I've been building this car for a few years I've also been on the forum getting bits of information here and there so I've decided to post up a few photos of my car to see what people think i know it's not a Ferrari it never will be, but it's the only one I can afford. if you can't buy it build it haha I like how mr2s are set up, I bought the car hail damaged, for the Ferrari kit it didn't matter at the end of the day it makes people look twice especially when the gt30 comes on boost if people are interested in this build I have heaps of info and photos

I'd like to see more pictures and details
I think it looks good but in the 3rd pic the roof and/or the bonnet seems kinda odd

+1 for more pics, interesting build, looks like the kit used was a decent quality one
Agree that something in the third pic looks a little odd, might be the perspective? The bonnet seems a little long, but there are some things you won't be able to get the same as a 360 especially with the windscreen (and a pillars) having a different shape/rake and the targa tops.

To me the most obvious things would be the wheels and mirrors, the mirrors you have are like the F430 ones but angled higher

Looks great . Well done on the build!
In my opinion a set of genuine or replica Ferrari wheels would make it look more authentic.

I'd love to put the real wheels on but there expensive and I'd have to run spacers still I've thought about getting roh modenas custom made because I'm currently running spacers and it's not the safest idea the modenas are pretty close to Ferrari wheels

And as far as the roof/ front ever since I've got it reassembled after being painted I've wanted to either paint the targas or fill them and repaint the roof because the targas are a dead giveaway to me and yes I'd did buy 430 style mirrors when I was buying bits and pieces so I put them on I do have the originals that are supposed to be extended but that will happen at some stage
I started looking at Ferrari replicas a few years ago which lead me to the mr2 which are available in aus they still are hard to find but more plentiful than the other floor pans some are using and I've always thought the mr2 is a nice sports car after a short while one came up that had been hail damaged it had been around the mr2 wa scene for a while the guy that used to own it went by the name of greddy es this is what it was once

It looks like it was a nice clean car but I found it at and auction it was written of due to hail damage it didn't run and every single performance piece was taken back to standard which i didn't mind also it was listed as a 1998 non turbo far from that being a 1990 factory turbo so I bought it got it over registration it had a modded gen1 celica ecu with some form of piggy back and would hit boost cut so I threw a wolf v550 ecu in it and also rebuilt the gearbox and continued driving the car around for a few months till I found how to get a Ferrari kit in aus went to auto salon to check out a few cars and found beyond custom advertising the kit had a car on display a few months went buy and I called him up asking about the kits and he told me has the old kit he had on the display car so I bought it and didn't have to wait for shipping out of the uk (the kit is a Dave jones kit) he no longer needed it as he has made his own mould off a real Ferrari and now stretches the mr2 10 inches between the door and rear wheels this is his mr2 Ferrari

He then told me that the front end was out of proportion on the kit I was purchasing so I got him to stretch the front end by 5 inches behind the front headlights you can see the stretch in this photo

So once I got all the pieces it was time to fit it all up...

Ok I'll write up a little more on the build, the fit up on these kits Is fairly easy all the removable panels get unbolted .once all the panels are removed its time for a few modifications to the body the rear quarter panels have to be cut around we're the the old tail lights bolt in as seen in these

And then the wheel arches need to be raised because of the extra width of the body otherwise the car wont have hardly any suspension I don't have before photos of the arch trim just afters basically on the rear just tapered them up to about 3 inches higher at the top and re welded fully to keep strength and the front was a similar task

There's a few other little things needed to do like the window washer squirters need to be installed into the cowl panel the rear quarter window glass has to be raised up as high as possible. the rear boot lock has to be mounted in a way that the rear boot mech/latch will still work that's basically all that was needed prior to the main part of the shell to be installed (it's the roof rear quarters and side skirts in one piece) this part of the kit is bonded on I just used a ****load of sikaflex 227 and took a grinder to the mr2 to roughen the surface to hold strong. The roof line of the kit meets the original mr2 half way along the roof line so I fiberglassed the kit to the car at the roofline and blended it in any way you can see the kit in the above photo sitting on the car ready to be fitted this photo is one of my trial fittings

On the sills a piece of angle iron is welded and the Ferrari skirts are countersink screwed to this
Then the bumper is installed three studs were bonded to the bumper and bolted onto the car. It is then bonded to the top half of the kit with trusty sikaflex so it's non removable from the point but that's just the way it goes the doors were next and that was just a bolt on door when I bought the kit I swapped Leon (beyond custom) for my standard doors for his Ferrari ones that were all ready to go so that saved me a heap of time there was a hole in the outer skins were the handle mechanism was modified to a different set up so I just filled that in. That was all for the doors.
The front clip was a hole piece like the rear (front quarters and bumper are all one) there is a bumper bracket that needs to be cut but that's about it apart from The arch trim/inner fender as seen earlier, a custom bumper support is made/bolted on there is a few mounts that I bonded to the body I wanted to keep the front clip as removable as possible but that's the Main assembly of the kit I'll update more later

Yep, awesome in a somewhat special way.  How did the panel look after it was welded fully to keep strength?
