Wow.... I'm up to page 10 on this story and about $10'000 and several months into my own race-car build. I almost don't want to read on in case something awful happens!! Still, I'm feeling very inspired although slightly annoyed that it will be dark by the time i finish work and wont be able to go home and work on my own.

Hello Hypermania,

Great to hear there is another race spec car being built. If your interested in any short cut, hints and tips, please drop a line and happy to help out. Just dont spend any money in suspension linkage upgrades just yet! I have something in the pipeline.

I could have saved 100+ on the build and a few $1000 and made a better car, so pleased to help if required.
Surok is a great guy and enthusiastic to boot, who can also help out.

Merry xmas

Steve

Hello Bud,

Alignment setting do vary quite a bit from what I have gathered. Anything from +4mm up front to -8mm on the rear depending on your car, weight, camber, caster settings, track layout, etc.
I ran +1mm up front and -4mm on the rear last time out. The car felt really nice but its hard to say if the toe settings was the reason for this as I could really get into the drive due to slipping clutch but a good starting point.
Do you do your own alignments or do you use a shop?

I always use a shop - doing it at home just isn't accurate enough.
I think my last settings were 0 toe on the front and -6 on the rear. Camber was -2.5 on the front and -1.5 on the rear. Front caster was +8

Is this similar to yours? I found that running a lot of negative toe as well as negative camber on the rear will delaminate tyres. I did run with -1.5 camber on the rear a few times without issues though if you have any more you'll delaminate the tyre.

I'm still running standard calipers all round for the brakes though I have the Wolfkatz kit on the front now with Supra TT rotors. I haven't run on the track with them yet though I was having front lockup problems last time I had it out. Probably a combination of not enough weight on the front of the car as well as brake bias. I'm thinking that it will be better once I put a splitter on the front.

It's been so long since I've had the car out and I have lost my alignment sheets so kind of need to start again hence asking what you are running. I'm planning on entering in the 6 hour regularity race at Wakefield in 2011 and hopefully Superlap as well.

The 6hr looks like a good idea. You may be able to put together a team of MR2's. Im sure there are a few runners in Vic who will come up for the event. EVO65 may come along for some practice, I might be able to do it, just depends on the Wakefield 300 which has changed dates to July. If Surok can make it he will certainly be in for a run.

The toe settings sound about right but would run a mm or 2 out if it has trouble turning in. The camber is less than mine but chances are mine is over done!
The real way to find out is with a pyrometer while testing. Thats what Im lead to believe based on discussion with a few engineers.
I havent come across the delamination as yet but may depend on which tyres you use. Teams ran 3 degree in the 24hr at Bathurst as well as the 12hr and production car championship without these issues so it could be tyre choice.
As for alignments, its a pretty easy process to do on track and allows you to tune the settings while your there to perfect the setup with little down time. I dont know any team which does not use this approach.

With the brakes, you can always try using different brake compounds for front and rear to balance it out. More aggressive rear pad or upgrade to the RX7 rear kit.
Before any of these options, try adjusting your damping rate for the front and tyre pressures.

Seems like we should organise a track day as there are a few out there keen on having a run.

Open practice at EC on the 17th. Steve will be there with his RX7. If mine is organised, I will be there.
Hey, just picked up a pyrometer and in car camera! Gearbox will be out by friday

Pulled the gearbox out today to see what is happening with the clutch. After measuring it up, it is out a little but not too much but seemed to be enough to make it slip. The supplier for the shims is oversea's so the car is off the road for another two weeks or so. Still, it allows me to tick a few more boxes on the list.
Been shopping for some bits and pieces:
2"ducting for brakes as the 3" is too big
New clutch slave cylinder
New braided clutch line
More lexan for a new engine cover (finally)
New spark plugs(first time since purchasing the car..)
New 3"flares
New high tensile bump steer links for the front end. These are now in parallel with the LCA's.
New Southwest rear LCA's but who knows if they will ever show up. My advise is to keep away from these guys..
650cc injectors are also on their way.
Also ordered a inlet flange which will be built up to my spec over the next month or so.
Plus a new TV screen to see who the hell is behind me!

There are still plenty of things to be done with a new Adaptronic ECU just about at the top of the list. End of Jan looks about right.
So it will be rewired and tuned to suit. It will be a differnet car with a decent tune, decent bump steer and down to 1000kg without driver and fuel. May event get a little closer to the black nugget at WTAC..

Im still looking at four link suspension but will have to wait till later in the year as it all takes time but will have something else sorted out in the meantime. The existing system of bolting a block of alloy between a ball join and the hub never really sat well with me. Then you stick rose jointed links or poly bushes on that set up. It works but its a bit of a mess.. To me it really needs to be simplified in a way which makes it stronger and lighter.

Was talking with a EVO X owner today. Couldnt believe a MR2 was that quick at Wakefield(B24) or EC( EVO65's). People do have a funny perception of the MR2..

Also are you aware that they use a wide band knock sensor over in Japan ?
If you look at the block where the tapped thread for the Knock sensor is go to the right and you will find the same shape on the block.
They also tap another thread into the block and run 2 knock sensors . sshhhhh :)

What brand are the calipers front and rotors ?
Also do you still have the OEM booster and proportionating valve ?
